Hoping to get help. Virus program McAfee was uptodate; firewall was intact; clicked on a link and got a pop-up that automatically installed some sort of a so-called "virus scan 2008" on my computer and began to receive pop-ups and page redirects, along with some sort of "automatic virus scan" running in one of the windows. I closed these windows and ran a scan with McAfee which aborted after finding and quarantining a trojan and detecting an unauthorized registry change (to the Internet Explorer shell browser InProcServer32C:\WINDOWS\System32\shell32.dll). I noted a new program icon on my desktop "virus scan 2008" and deleted this program through Windows add/remove programs. The virus scan I initiated in McAfee aborted early on (after finding the trojan and registry change); and I was unable to re-initiate it. Further, I received an alert that the virus monitoring feature of McAfee was turned off. I tried to enable it, but I get a window that says "one or more problems cannot be fixed because of an error," and I am unable to enable virus protection. When I try to run a scan, I get a window that states that the "virus scan failed; error 2147467259). I tried to restore my computer to an earlier checkpoint, and I get a window upon Windows being restarted that states that the computer is unable to be restored to an earlier point. I've tried using two different recent checkpoints without success. I am running Windows XP Media Edition SP2 with the latest version of MSIE.

Since I have lots of work to do, I imagine it would be wise to reinstall McAfee to have virus protection. In the meantime ... thank you in advance to whomever who might help me.

Best,

Nigel

Re: Malware and virus this morning - Unable to repair <|:-(

Unread postby nigebirch » January 16th, 2009, 1:38 pm

After perusing the web and reading various posts on this forum, I dowloaded Malwarebytes (great program!) and Superantispyware and ran the scans. Various rootkit, several (like 45) trojans and various adware programs were found (62 to be exact) and removed/quarantined, programs that were undected by McAfee Security Center. The computer appears to be operating well now, and no more setting changes to MSIE, pop-ups, virus program disabling, etc., etc.
So, there is no need to address my post. I just wanted to thank you for this excellent forum.
Best regards,
Nigel
