Virtumonde and Smitfraud-C infection, maybe more

Unread postby SDCarson » January 4th, 2009, 9:42 pm

I was on the gaming forum "Thottbot" when McAfee reported fixing a trojan. Simultaneously, pop-ups appeared asking whether I wanted to 'download virus protection 2009 NOW'. The pop-ups were not marked as McAfee, so I did not click ok; however, I did click on the x to exit, and on the 'No' button offered. Yes, I know better than this. I restarted and kicked off a McAfee scan. Here comes the really stupid part: while the McAfee scan was running, Spybot popped up to say a value had been deleted from my registry, allow or deny--I allowed (duh) believing that it was a good change done by McAfee. Well, then I started getting new and horrible desktop icons, and found that my internet searches were being re-directed, plus constant pop-ups.

Following the instructions of a more knowledgeable person than myself, I booted up in safe mode, went to Internet Options and deleted all browsing history, cookies, offline content, etc. I went through the Temporary Internet Folder/Content.IE5 folders and deleted all the contents of those, except for the .ini and the thumbs.db in each. I also deleted cookies where I found them (i.e., 'sextracker'...).

Currently I cannot run a McAfee scan in either safe or regular mode; about 40% through, I get a restart message: 'Windows must now reboot becauCOM Server Process Launcher Service terminated unexpectedly' and 'this shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM'; also 'Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered aproblem and needs to close' (error signature: szAppName svchost.exe szApppVer:5.1.200.5512 szModName: unknown szModVer: 0.0.0.0 offset: 016f101c).

Sometimes I cannot open in safe mode at all, it hangs at or just before the dialog box asking whether I really want to work in safe mode or do a systems restore.

I went to ...System Tools/System Restore, and found "there are no restore points available", and that I can't navigate to a different month.

The infected machine cannot function on line (I'm writing this from my laptop): Internet Explorer opens to my homepage (which is Google), but when I try to go to another site, I get the 'web page cannot open' message.

Spybot finds the following items over and over, and says "fixed" when I push the button, but they're still there (apparently) on the next scan: Smitfraud-C; Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled; Virtumonde; and Virtumonde.generic.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while you run Hijackthis.
  • If I do not hear from you in 5 days from my last post this topic will be closed.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Followed the instructions above, and clicked on [Save List...] It did not give me any options about where to save, instead HJT closed--so I do not have this list for you yet.

Please tell me where to look for it in my files, and what it will look like when I find it.

I disabled McAfee and started the run process. It asked me whether I wanted to install the "Windows Recovery Console" and that I had to have a connection to the internet to do so.

I don't know the answer to this question, so I halted the install.

Please tell me whether I should say Yes or No; if Yes, isn't it risky to connect to the internet with McAfee disabled?

When you click on save list it should prompt you where to save it. Ususally by default ity's MY documents. If it doesn't work don't worry about that now.

Yes instal the recovery console. read from the directions to install the recovery console on the page where you downloaded the file.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

If you need help on disabling your anitvirus visit this link.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\system32\ffkuz.dll
c:\windows\system32\khfCtqpQ.dll
c:\windows\system32\bgl.exe

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

3. Close any open browsers.

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

NOTE: This script was done for this user specifically.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE IT IF YOU ARE NOT THIS USER
YOU WILL HURT THE WORKINGS OF YOUR COMPUTER !!
.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

    Submit a file to Jotti
    Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste this filepath in there.
If theres is more than one file to scan, insert them 1 at a time.

    c:\windows\system32\CDCA3B264D.sys

    Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

You may recieve a message stating "
"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"

Just let me know if that is what you saw.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
    http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

When I removed '020 - Appinit_DLLs: hgyxty.dll' I got the following error message:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: hgyxty.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 7.0.5730.13
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

I continued the scan and here is the log:

_______________________________________
So many people are point and click crazy either because there naive or their in a rush.

Always watch closely to any software your installing.
If they want to install something more than their program stop right there and investigate what it is they want to place on your computer.
If they give you the option not to install it choose that until you investigate it completely.
The more you install that you don't want or need the more you'll wish you didn't.

Here's a site with great advise on how to AVOID malware. Much easier to do than removing it.

Safe and Happy Surfing. :)
