Generic!artemis - Vundo infection

Unread postby HoratioSeattle » December 29th, 2008, 4:02 pm

My computer is infected still I think. I've read other boards and postings about Generic!artemis. McAfee discovered the issue, but like other posters, it could not fix. Also Mozillla Firefox ocassionally opens up a new window going to "random" websites.
I have run Malwarebytes anti-malware both in safe-mode and safe-mode with networking and it seems to get everything, till I use Firefox again. Then the cycle repeats.

So after running malwarebytes this last time in safe mode, I ran Highjackthis (in safe mode) and got the following log:

THEN I REBOOTED in regular mode, re-ran Hijackthis
... I dunno if it will show anything else different. I have not tried running Firefox yet again. I have disconnected the box from the network and am communicating through another computer.

Re: Generic!artemis - Vundo infection

Unread postby Odd dude » January 2nd, 2009, 12:40 pm

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I'm Odd dude, pleased to meet you; if it helps, you can call me OD ;). I will be helping you with your infection. However, it is important to take note of the following - quite the wall of text, I know, but please bear with me:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (Hijackthis is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient whilst I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please carefully read any instruction that I give you.
    Reading too lightly will cause you to miss important steps, which could have destructive effects.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Only YOU must use these instructions, they are not suitable for any other computer, similar issues or not.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan. The one thing you should always do, though, is making sure that your antivirus definitions are up-to-date!
  • If I tell you to download a tool which you already have, please re-download it and do not use the copy you already have. This is because the tools are updated regularly.
  • In Windows Vista, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as administrator!
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you were to do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
    Because of this, you must reply within five days
    . I will post a reminder should you seem to fail to do this, however, if you fail to reply within five days then, unless I have been notified of your absence in advance, the topic shall be closed!
  • As I am still in training at the Malware Removal University, anything I do must be checked by an experienced malware fighter. This means there might be a slight delay in my answers.
  • Lastly, I am no magican. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system. Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

I am now analyzing your situation and hope to be back with you soon. While I am reviewing your situation, could you please do the following for me:

Make an Uninstall List
I need you to create an uninstall list so I can further analyze your situation.

  • Start HijackThis.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager
  • Click Save list...
  • Save the list to your desktop, or any other convenient place.

Please post back:
  • Uninstall list
  • New hijackthis log

Happy new year!

ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without expert guidance.

ComboFix uses very brute tactics to rip malware off your system. Do not panic if your antivirus software warns you about the file.

:!: Please disable all your antivirus software, firewalls, and antispyware software BEFORE running ComboFix!! :!:

  • Download ComboFix from here and save it to your desktop
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
  • Now start ComboFix
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running!
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply

If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, plug the cable/reciever/whatever you use to connect to the internet out and back in.

Post back:
- log from Malwarebytes (you said you ran it)
- Combofix log
- new HJT log
- description of how the computer is running

Well combfix ran, nuked some stuff and everything "seems" fine. The hitch is since I was running McAffee off of an HP MediaSmart home server, I didn't want to log onto that server to turn off McAffee for fear of infecting it somehow. Maybe I was too paranoid. So now everytime I try to access the administration interface for McAffee I get corrupted error pages... so I'll have to figure this out with MCAffee or HP, god help me. So I don't have antivirus running on my computer right now. I decided to go ahead and run the other programs, here are their logs:

I havn't tried running Firefox yet... I try that as soon as I can get McAfee running again. I'll post back.

You should have informed me. There was no need to uninstall McAfee. Also, you should have asked whether logging into that server would be fine - because it would have been.

Okay. You uninstalled your antivirus. Your system is infected, and now you won't know if malware (re)downloads something bad, because you don't have an antivirus to notify you about such events.

I want you to download and install one free antivirus program NOW! If you can't choose any, or don't know where to look, you can pick one of these:
Avira Antivir
Avast

Next...

There is a file I do not recognize. Please go to Jotti's.
  • Copy and paste the following text into the field under File to upload & scan:
    Code: Select all
    c:\windows\system32\2E5D9C5FB9.sys
  • Click Submit. The file will now be scanned for malware and the results will be displayed from the screen. Select the part where the virus scan results are shown (the part starting with A-squared and ending with VBA32) and copy and paste this to notepad.
  • Copy and paste the whole notepad file you just made into your reply.

Run CFScript
Open notepad and copy/paste the following to it:

Code: Select all
Folder::
C:\temp
Registry::
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusOverride"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"%windir%\\system32\\sessmgr.exe"=-
"d:\\Program Files\\LimeWire\\LimeWire.exe"=-
Driver::
Pfprvmtmtpap
File::
c:\windows\Tasks\burquett.job

Save this to your desktop as "CFScript.txt".

Disconnect from the internet, disable your antimalware software like you did before, and drag CFScript into ComboFix

Image

ComboFix will run again, please be patient and post the log like usual.

Install Adobe Reader
Okay, here's the deal.

You're using an outdated version of Adobe Acrobat, which will undoubtedly contain security leaks.

I am not going to force you to update because it costs quite some money to do so, however I insist that you use an updated version for viewing PDF files.
For anything else which the reader cannot do, feel free to use your Acrobat 6.

So now please download and install the latest version of Adobe Reader from here.
From now on, use the Reader to read PDF files.

Post back:
- Jotti results
- ComboFix log
- New hijackthis log
- How is the computer doing?

OK I'm sorry. I guess I jumped when I shouldn't have. Sigh. OK - So this is what I've done wrong since then:

I ran the scans without runnin McAfee and posted the results. I then figued out how to do reinstall McAfee from the internet and it "seems" fine. But as you pointed out, I might have stepped into poo-poo.

So McAfee is installed, but maybe its not proper... so should I go ahead and get Avast and do the other things listed?...

Again, I'm sorry. I'll pause until I hear back from you Odd.

If you now have McAfee installed you now have an active antivirus which protects you from attacks, so no need to get a second one.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
I need you to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

  • Install the program by following the prompts after double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe
  • Once you approach the final installation screen, put a check next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish
  • MBAM (that's an acronym of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) will now start. Choose Perform full scan and click Scan
  • Get a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and watch some TV for about an hour.
  • Once the scan has finished, click OK, then Show Results.
  • Put a check next to everything, then click Remove selected.
  • Now, a log will open. Save this to your desktop and post it.

Then reboot and post a new hijackthis log, along with the log from MBAM.

My bad - forgot you already had Malwarebytes'. You can just update it to the latest definitions and then do a scan with it.

There is no need to disable your protection software when executing my batch file.
