Rogue Anti-spyware program called "System Security Firewall"

Unread postby NinaB » December 24th, 2008, 10:26 pm

One of those unwanted Christmas presents has arrived. Something called "System Security Firewall" has installed itself on my husband's computer. It causes various windows to pop up. One window says System Security Firewall Alert and says that Internet Explorer has been infected with the worm Lsas.Blaster.Keylogger, which they claim is trying to send our credit card information. It then invites you "Activate System Security" or "Remain Unprotected". Another window says "Warning 38 Infections Found!" , another shows a list of infections, another asks me to download the lastest database updates. The windows are not easy to close, but when I do manage to close them, they come back again in a few minutes. Besides the popups, the program has also installed a desktop icon and a quickstart icon that look like a shield with diagonal red and gold stripes.

I did a complete system scan with Norton Antivirus, and it finds nothing. I suspect that there is no malware on the computer other than the System Security Firewall itself.

I haven't found many posts on the Internet about this System Security Firewall, but I did find this one:

http://forums.techguy.org/malware-remov ... t-pop.html

and several about programs that behave the same (including the warning about lsas.blaster.keylogger), especially Winweb Security:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic187828.html

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-1816 ... r-keyloger

None of these links have any info on how to remove this annoyance.

I hope you can help. My HijackThis log is attached.

Thanks,

NinaB

Re: Rogue Anti-spyware program called "System Security Firewall"

Unread postby davis » December 27th, 2008, 4:11 pm

Hi NinaB,

The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic. Thanks

Step1

Download OTMoveIt3.exe by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on OTMoveIt3.exe to run it
  • Copy & paste the contents of the Code box below into Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved
  • Note: Do not type it out to minimize the risk of typo error
    Code: Select all
    :Processes
    explorer.exe
    30519319.exe

    :Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\683977947\30519319.exe

    :Reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "30519319"=-

    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Click on MoveIt!
  • When done, click on Exit
  • Note: If a file or folder can't be moved immediately, you may be asked to restart your computer. Choose Yes.
  • A log will be produced at C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\date_time.log, where date_time are numbers. Post this log in your next reply.

Step2

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.or you can find from here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

In your next reply, please post back:

1.OTMoveIT log
2.MBAM log
3.New HJT log

Tell me how your pc is running now.

Hi Davis,

The computer still seems to be acting fine. The Kaspersky scanner did find some infections in my husband's Eudora email inbox. I hope we can delete the specific email messages that are infected instead of having to delete the whole inbox.

Re: Rogue Anti-spyware program called "System Security Firewall"

Unread postby davis » December 31st, 2008, 6:36 am

Hi NinaB,

Since kaspersky online scan doesn't tell which mail has the infection, It's hard to pick up the infected mails though.

But we can delete some mails which may be spam, unknown senders or commercial stuff. Especially, Do not click or download any attachced files from those mails.

In your case, The Kas displace Threat name as Suspicious. That doesn't mean it was infected. Maybe it's a false positive. We can check with another online scanner to make sure you're good to go. Please do the following:

Step1

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

In your next reply, please post back.

1.ESET log
2.Fresh HJT log

Thanks.

Hi Davis,

Yes, I'm still here. :profileleft: Sorry! I just got very busy for a few days.

I did the ESET scan. It found and deleted one of the files moved by MoveIt. My husband deleted things he didn't want from his Inbox, but didn't find any suspicious-looking attachments. I think we are OK at this point.

Thanks for all you help! I have included the ESET log and new Hijackthis log below.

Thanks again,

NinaB

Re: Rogue Anti-spyware program called "System Security Firewall"

Unread postby davis » January 4th, 2009, 11:23 am

Hi NinaB,

The logs look good. Any issue left? If not, let's do some housecleaning.

  1. Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  2. Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  3. Click the CleanUp! button.
  4. Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  5. If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  6. The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  7. Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Remember to delete RSIT and the folder in C:\rsit

Now that your system is clean, kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - Now, you are free of virus. You should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

    Turn off System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Turn ON System Restore

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will remove all restore points and make a new one.
  2. Update your antivirus programs

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
    Secunia Software Inspector
    F-secure Health Check

  3. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

I don't see any firewall in your HijackThis log, so i assume you use windows firewall.

Windows firewall is not recommended. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, it doesn't block anything at all outbound, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. Since most malware accesses the registry and can disable the Windows firewall, it's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.

    FREE FIREWALLS

You can choose a free firewall from Here
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  4. Make your Internet Explorer more secure

Please referring this thread to configure Internet Explorer 7 properly.

  5. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  6. Install a-squared Free -a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Clean your PC with a-squared Free

  7. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"
Read some information Here how to prevent Malware.

Thanks Davis. I really appreciate your help.

I have one question about firewalls. Does Norton Antivirus include a firewall? We used to have the Kerio firewall on all our family computers, but when it was running we kept getting scary system crashes (with the "blue screen of death"). We had Windows Firewall turned off, but we had Norton Internet Worm Protection turned on in Norton Antivirus. Someone told me that Norton Internet Worm Protection is acutally a firewall, and that you can't have two firewalls running on your computer at the same time without causing problems. My question now is whether Norton Internet Worm Protection is really a firewall, and, a related question, in the new version of Norton Antivirus there is a feature called "Intrusion Prevention" - but I'm not sure if its the same as what was called Norton Internet Worm Protection in the previous versions.

Thanks,

Nina

Hi NinaB,

My question now is whether Norton Internet Worm Protection is really a firewall

Please go to Here: http://www.outpostfirewall.com/forum/sh ... hp?t=18011

in the new version of Norton Antivirus there is a feature called "Intrusion Prevention"

Please go to Here: http://www.symantec.com/press/2004/n040818.html

From the following thread, we know "Intrusion Prevention" is different from "Firewall activities". They may be bundled together but still running different jobs.

Hope this helps.

Hi Davis,

Thanks for the info. I din't realize that Norton "Intrusion Prevention" was not a complete firewall. I installed Comodo ( just the firewall part) on my husband's computer, and everything seems to be working fine. It is running along with Norton. I guess I should disable Norton "Intrusion Prevention" since Comodo will block intrusions anyway.

Thanks,

NinaB
