Trojans re-directing Anti Virus 2009 sellers

Unread postby Bacchus » December 7th, 2008, 9:42 pm

Greetings.

This is the best site I have seen for helping those folks who have caught a virus of some description or another. I have been using a version of F-Secure Anti Virus software provided by my ISP, but it wasn't able to keep my computer clean, or even deal properly with the threat.

I would very much appreciate any help you can give to remove the offending software.

During browsing operations with IE, a pop up has been appearing advising me that I may have a virus and that I should buy Anti Virus 2009 and even when I click to shut the box, I am re-directed to one of several websites. They are hxxp://www.antimalwareguardpro.com, hxxp://www.antiviruspremiumscanner.com, pro-scanner-online.com, etc.
I have run numerous scans since the first known infection on or about 30 Nov, first with F-Secure and latterly with AVG and although several trojans have been discovered and removed, they still keep popping up.

Here is the Hijack this log.

In addition, there is another window that opens occasionally, which looks suspicious. In the header, it reads "CL RC Engine 3 Dummy Winidow: PCMService.exe - Application Error". Note the misspelling of "Window". The message beneath says "The instruction at "0x0040245" referenced memory at "0x00000008". The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program. Click on Cancel to debug."

Hi Bacchus

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Thanks for replying. I was out of town all day yesterday, so only got your message just now.
Since my initial post, I have continued scanning and removing viruses, which are continually being replicated, so here is my latest Hijack this log.
In the meantime, I will download and try ComboFix and get back to you.

Unread postby Bacchus » December 11th, 2008, 7:52 pm

Hi Shaba,
Had a few problems installing the Recovery Console, but finally managed and then ran Combo Fix. I then left the computer and when I returned, it had shut down. Re-started and saw the ComboFix window saying it was producing a report and not to start any programs. Problem is that a few programs are included in Startup, so I shut them down as they started where I could, but I don't know if it affected any of the outcome.
Anyway, here are the reports of ComboFix and Hijack this.

Re: Trojans re-directing Anti Virus 2009 sellers

Unread postby Shaba » December 12th, 2008, 4:29 am

No worries, that seems to have gone fine :)

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Code: Select all
File::
c:\windows\system32\kiyejebe.exe
c:\windows\system32\hijadazu

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Image

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.

Thanks Shaba.
Posted below are the logs you requested.

Early on in this process of trying to clear the viruses out, and before posting on this board, I noticed some odd looking file names in Windows\System32 and using Safe Mode, removed what I thought might be viruses to a separate directory. Some of them were indeed viruses, as discovered by the process that you have taken me through, but there are two files that I am still not sure about:
dayonene.dll
posetoma.exe

Any idea what I should do about these?

Re: Trojans re-directing Anti Virus 2009 sellers

Unread postby Shaba » December 12th, 2008, 2:15 pm

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Empty this folder:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine

Empty Recycle Bin.

Still problems?

OK, I've done that and everything seems to be normal, at least for the time being.
Thank you very much for your help with this. I really appreciate what you've been able to do.

I have another question, which is not virus related, but which I've noticed now that I'm looking critically at everything, is that there are two shortcuts for IE in the Start menu. Is that a simple fix?

Ref. the IE shortcuts in the Start panel; there is no filepath. When I right click, One shortcut gives 3 options (1) Browse the internet (2) Internet Properties (the same dialog box as when you click on Tools/Internet Options from the IE tool bar) (3) Remove from this list.
The second shortcut gives 3 similar options, plus one other; (1) Open home page (2) Remove from this list (3) Rename (4) Properties (the same dialog box as when you click on Tools/Internet Options from the IE tool bar).
I suppose I could start with removing it from the list?

On the virus front; after following your instructions, I uninstalled and re-installed AVG and ran a scan. It found a trojan -Vundo in System Restore, so that was removed and I did a disk cleanup and removed all but the last System Restore Point. Further scans with AVG have so far found nothing unusual, although I have had that warning box referred to earlier, which I thought looked suspicious.

"In addition, there is another window that opens occasionally, which looks suspicious.

"I suppose I could start with removing it from the list?"

Yes.

As for that error message, fixing this entry should help:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCMService] "C:\Program Files\Dell\MediaDirect\PCMService.exe"
