Hello! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research so please be patient while I work on your log and I will post back here with any recommendations.

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I don't see anything too bad, is there any reason other than slowness why you think you are infected? You can read through this tutorial to see if it can help speed up your computer: http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials ... slowly.php

Step 1:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.

Step 2:
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

Logs to Post:
  • The Malwarebytes log
  • log.txt and info.txt from RSIT

Re: Can't get rid of malware!

Unread postby jjwiiwi » December 5th, 2008, 12:35 pm

Mainly the computer runs really really slow (and used to be fast!). Also, for a while I was dealing with a BSOD which would not let me boot, even with safe mode. Something about an unmountable boot volume. I was able to get it up and running again by using the Windows XP installation CD and CHKDSK.

Oh, and I have tried all of the suggested things to do for a slow computer as mentioned on http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials ... slowly.php. I've cleared temp items using CCleaner, defragged numerous times, disabled indexing, disabled unnecessary services, disabled unnecessary startup applications, disabled visual effects, etc, to no avail. :(

I still don't see any malware and at this point I don't believe it's causing your speed issues. Is it your internet browsing that is slow or just your computer eg. it takes a long time to open up a program? Did it suddenly become slow or did it gradually happen?

If your computer is acting sluggish now we can see if anything is hogging the CPU. Press Control+Alt+Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and take note of which processes are using the most CPU.

Step 1:
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    R3 - URLSearchHook: {EA551C00-2AE5-11d3-8592-00A0C98E9EA4} - - (no file)
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNotify.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNotify.exe (User 'Default user')
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} -

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application and Restart your computer.

Step 2:
  1. Please download F-Secure Blacklight and save it to C drive.
  2. Click on Start > Run and copy and paste in the following: C:\fsbl.exe /expert. Click OK.
  3. You will be shown a license agreement. Read through it and select I accept the agreement. Click Next.
  4. Click on Scan.
  5. Once the scan is done, close F-Secure Blacklight. Don't rename anything found!
  6. A log will be produced on your C drive. It's named fsbl-XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.log, where the XXXXXXXXXXXXXX are numbers. Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log .

No, the browsing is not really slow at all. But the computer is really slow, it takes forever to start up a program.

The processes taking up the most memory are firefox 106MB, avgrsx.exe 46MB, svchost 24MB, explorer 21MB, Outlook 20MB.

Your logs are still clean, we could run more scans but I don't believe they are going to find anything. You could try using system restore to a date before your computer became slow or even reformatting and reinstalling your OS. I'm fairly certain you don't have any malware, I can look further if you want but you may like to ask at a specialist tech forum like pcpitstop: http://forums.pcpitstop.com/ who may be able to help you speed up your pc.

Due to lack of activity, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
