Need help with malware virus

Here is my HijackThis log file. I must have picked up some sort of virus. First it started redirecting search results from google and yahoo to other sites and now it is slowing my cpu down dramatically. I have run SpyWare Doctor, McAfee and Stopzilla and have picked up a few things supsect files to delete but nothing has fixed the problem. What ever help you could give me would be appreciated. The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!


  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.


Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!



I'm not seeing anything obvious in the log. We are going to have to search this out.

DISABLE Spyware Doctor
It is a good program, but ... it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

  • Download Random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Strange still nothing jumping out at me.
Let's go with this plan:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post the contents of that log.

    If you accidently close it you may find it here.
    Start -> All Programs -> Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware -> Logs

    With Malwarebytes still open:



    • Click on More tools
    • Click on
      File assasin
      Run tool
    • At the prompt copy and past this in exactly


      C:\WINDOWS\imsins.BAK

    • Click OPEN.
      If the file still exsists

      You will be asked if you want to continue are you sure
    • Click yes..

      Do the same for the following files.

Here you go. After everything that McAfee, SpyDoctor and STOPzilla have fixed the same basic problem is that the cpu runs very slow and when you search on Google or Yahoo, the links brought up in the search results are different then the topic that you were searching. I just restarted my computer to remove the items Malwarebytes suggested and then ran HJ so the log is after I ran both tools you suggested. I did go and check google and it looks like you found something because it is not redirecting any more and it was before we started this session. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Mark

Malwarebytes anti malware actually found the culprit. This file is known to do exactly what you were experiencing.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sysaudio.sys << Notice how malware can be named to look like a legitimate file !
Note - DO NOT confuse this one with the legitimate sysaudio.sys file which is present in the %sysdir%\drivers folder!!! So don't delete the legitimate %sysdir%\drivers\sysaudio.sys file!

I'm pretty sure your OK now. Let me know other wise.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10.

I deleted and reloaded Java as you suggested. Things seem to running much better with the overall speed and google is working as well. I have noticed consistently when rebooting a "sMAX4PNP is not responding" error message pops up during shut down and on start up I get an error message that says "smart bridge alert. motivesb.exe entry point not found" I am not sure if these are related to the malware or if it was something I did. Any idea? Everything else seems great. Thanks

Those issues your having aren't malware related.
Just google some of that and you'll see lots of people dealing with the same issues.

At the bottom I will recommend another forum better suited to help you with those issues.
Let's first finish up here.

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.
Please do these in the order I suggest!

Download and install CCleaner from here.

Now open the program and click on Run Cleaner

It has a great feature to where you can save cookies you do not want cleaned.

With CCleaner open/
Click options / cookies... now you can choose what cookies to keep . Highlight whatthetech.com (we know it's safe.) and click the arrow to move it to the right.
Now ccleaner will never remove this cookie as we know it's good.

You may opt out of cleaning cookies. If you clean them alls you will have to do is retype names and passwords for places you visit on the net 1 time.
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla
I clean all my cookies out from time to time. It's not that big a deal if you remember passwords.

Please create a 'clean' System Restore Point:
The reason for doing this is in case you need system restore you don't put back all we just took out.
Right click My Computer
Then Propeties then system restore
Place a check mark by turn off system restore
Click APPLY
Windows will give you a warning click yes
REBOOT

Now go right back to the same place and unchecksystem restore
Click APPLYand OK

Install SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs.
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.

A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
