Browser problems and kCFErrorDomainWinSock:10054

Unread postby 24t » November 21st, 2008, 5:56 am

I am having problems with browsers locking,

using safari I get this error:
“unknown error” (kCFErrorDomainWinSock:10054) Please choose Report Bugs to
Apple from the Help menu, note the error number, and describe what you did
before you saw this message.

Also the system performance is degraded, it does not always start up correctly - icons missing from the system tray.

Re: Browser problems and kCFErrorDomainWinSock:10054

Unread postby 24t » December 2nd, 2008, 6:41 pm

Hi chryssi.
I am the only user on the PC, I do use it for work but it is my own PC
I have now tried uninstalling safari installing it again.
I have been though nass instructions (I have not replaced the windows scripting) - they appear to be aimed at failing to access a htpps site. It is difficult to tell if the problem has now gone as it is not also consistent.

Hello 24T,

  • Please download this tool from Microsoft.
  • Double click on MGADiag.exe to run it.
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in. Save this file and post it in your next reply.

I am still the user 'Tim Neale'. I have not tried to fix any thing on my PC, other than following the instructions you gave.
However, the mother board was replace about 12 months ago - so the shop may have been fixing stuff.

Hello 24T,

I have some questions for you so i will be able to create a fix for you.

You say your pc is slow.
Do you use these 3 programs? Are they needed to run on Start-up?
The 2 first, are watching what you are doing, and giving you messages.
Do you need them? I would suggest you uninstall them if you don't need them.

Kaz Guardian Angel
RescueTime
Webshots

If we remove them from start-up will you be able to use them from the program it's self, and update them too?

Let me know.

Also tell me did you add these sites in your Trusted Zones intentionally?
If yes why? You can't access them otherwise?
(Links are disabled on purpose from me)

Code: Select all
hxxp://www.euwatch.eu
hxxp://portal.isiknowledge.com
hxxp://students.open.ac.uk
hxxp://*.tomorrow-is-here.org
hxxp://www.upfrontnews.co.uk

We generally do not recommend to have any site in your Trusted Zones.
So if you can access these sites normally, no need for them to be there.
Let me know about this too.

Hello 24T,

Disable SUPERAntiSpyware until the computer is clean
  • Right-click on the shortcut from the system tray
  • Choose View Control Center (preferences/options)
  • On the General and Startup tab, uncheck Start SUPERAntispyware when Windows starts.
  • Click Close to exit.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Did you have any time Norman Anti-virus on this Pc? I can see some remainants. If you removed it already, we need to remove the remainants.
Do this if you already uninstalled Norman Anti-Virus.

Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop NipSvc
sc delete NipSvc
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Do you have a desktop item saved from the site which shows in this line?
Do you know this site?

If not, fix the line too, and additionally do this:

Go to start -> control panel -> Display properties -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop... -> Web tab, then uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page").
Also remove the checkmark from the the Lock Desktop Items box if it is checked.
Apply.
Apply and Exit Display properties.

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following Folders: if found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Program Files\Kaz Guardian Angel
C:\Program Files\RescueTime
C:\NORMAN << Again remove this if Norman is removed.

System response appears to have improved. There has been no recurrence of previous error, but as I said before it is intermittent, so could possibly still return.

Hello 24T,

You answered back on time! :)

I was about to close your topic. After 5 days a user doesn't reply to our latest post, we close threads, so if you want to finish this, please answer sooner.
----------------------------------------------
There is also a folder C:\NormanAV shall I delete this as well?

Yes since you do not have NormanAV anymore delete it.

System response appears to have improved. There has been no recurrence of previous error, but as I said before it is intermittent, so could possibly still return.

Good, if the safari error returns, you can try uninstall and re-install the program.
----------------------------------------------
Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 11.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • These show is your programs list:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 3
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 7
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
----------------------------------------------
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
