Hi nubcake,

my email auto sended out this 'See letter dear' email to all of my contacts
How did you find that this happened? Are the emails in your sent email folder? Which email program do you use? Can you post a copy of the email?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove BitComet. This needs to be removed as site policy is to require users to remove all P2P programs as part of cleaning.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Hi i have removed BitComet as you requested and the problem seemed to went away. So im guessing there was a trojan within a file i downloaded. And if you still would like to know, i am using Hotmail and below is the contents of the email:

Dear friend,

Now the company is under sales promotion, all the products are sold nearly at its cost.
They provide the best service to customers, they provide you with original products of
good quality, and what is more, the price is a surprising happiness to you!
It is realy a good chance for shopping.just grasp the opportunity,Now or never!
The web address: hxxp://www . evbcn.com

Thanks for your time. Have a nice day.

Hi,

I'm glad to hear things are better, but a lack of symptoms doesn't necessarily indicate your machine is clean. If you answer the other questions I posed in my previous post I might be able to advise you further:

How did you find that this happened?
Are the emails in your sent email folder?
Are you using Hotmail through the website or in conjunction with a local email program, like Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail?

Hi, i noticed it because it appeared in my inbox. I am using Windows Live Messenger/Hotmail which i think is about the same as accessing through the website directly. Because i added my own email address to my contacts so when it massed send out the email i received it myself to. Not to mention when it failed, hotmail auto sends a failed delivery message back to me which i had tonnes of it.

Hi nubcake,

One thing you should know is that it's not necessary to compromise your computer or Hotmail password to send emails in your name. Any spammer can send out emails that have your address in the 'from' field, and this is often done to make the spam appear legitimate and get past email filters etc. The typical symptom of this is a lot of 'failed delivery' messages, you can read about this here:
http://secondwheel.googlepages.com/backscatter
http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.p ... ;16;fpid;1

However, if you can confirm that the email was sent specifically to your contacts, if it appears in your sent mail folder, if the email headers indicate that it was sent from your account, or there is other direct evidence that it was sent from your account, then your email account may have been accessed. From what you have said I can't confirm whether this has happened or not, but the best thing to do is to change your password immediately and be sure to use a strong password.

If you think your Hotmail account may have been accessed, then I recommend we give your machine the once over to make sure it's not compromised in any way. Please let me know how you wish to proceed.

Hi again, yes after checking abit, they did appear in my sent folder with my email address on the 'From' Field. If i am not wrong it was sent to all of my contacts and some of my frens have confirmed with me that they did receive the email.

However i believed it was the trojan that i caught while downloading a file using BitComet that caused the problem because it seemed that my girlfriend's email did the same thing when she signed in on my laptop thus erasing the likelihood that our Hotmail were accessed. Being that, i have changed my password as you suggested.

OK, in that case I recommend we give your machine a once over to check for malware infection. Please let me know how you wish to proceed.

I mean check it for malware infection. This will involve examining your machine with some tools and performing some scans. I know you mentioned that the problem appears to have gone away, but a lack of symptoms doesn't necessarily indicate the infection is gone, so I suggest we check it out.

If you wish to do so, please begin as follows:

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Hmm.. i think its okay.I will skip the scan because by the time i get the time to do a scan, this thread would have been closed as inactive.

Have a nice day. :)

You're welcome. Here are some tips to help you keep your machine clean:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know that you have read this. :)

Hi, once again thanks for your help.

May i ask if the MVPS Host is similar to PeerGuardian? Because some of my friends suggest that i download PeerGuardian2.

By the way i am using avast! antivirus, is it any good or do you have better recommendations?

May i ask if the MVPS Host is similar to PeerGuardian? Because some of my friends suggest that i download PeerGuardian2.
PeerGuardian is a program designed to protect people who are downloading files illegally through peer-to-peer networks. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it. I strongly recommend you do not use P2P programs, and then you will have no need for PeerGuardian.

The MVPs hosts file blocks domain names which serve malware, advertising and other unwanted content. It is not a program which you run, so it does not consume any resources on your machine. It is easy to install and immediately provides protection. You can read more about it here:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

By the way i am using avast! antivirus, is it any good or do you have better recommendations?
Avast! is an excellent antivirus so if you are happy with it and keeping it updated and active then it will provide good protection.

If however you are unhappy with it, or wish to try another program, Avira Antivir is another good and free choice:
http://www.free-av.com/

It's very important to run only one antivirus at once, if you ever wish to change antivirus, please follow this procedure:
- Download the new antivirus installer - but do not run it
- Disconnect from the internet
- Uninstall your current antivirus, reboot if necessary
- Run the new antivirus installer, reboot if necessary
- Re-connect to the internet and update

If you have any other questions please ask.
