Unread postby Xnex » October 12th, 2008, 6:50 pm

Hello, below is my log file generated by the hijack this program. Several issues with my machine. I have a large warning permanantly displayed on my desktop that says "Warning spyware threat has been detected on your PC Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity". There is also an icon at the bottom right hand side of my desktop near the clock that keeps giving me popup's warning me of various issues relating to the lack of security of my computer. The icon is shaped like a small "yield sign" with and exclamation point inside it. Also my system clock had been changed to something similar to a 24 hour clock. Right now at 6:47 pm my system clock displays 08:47. Log file below

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:

  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible.
Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

1 - SDFix

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

2 - Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

3 - Run SDFix

  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

4 - Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

5 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the SDFix.Report.txt (C:\SDFix\report.txt)
2. the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

PEKU006

Thank you for taking time to assist me with this. Your help is certainly appreciated.

I have downloaded and used the programs you instructed me too use. Below is a log from both programs. After running the programs I notice that my desktop is now back to "normal" and the advertisement that was perm. on my desktop is now gone. However I see that there are still a couple of issues that I want to tell you about.

1) Each time I reboot the computer it immediately goes into an installation mode and states that it is installing Backup Dell Installed Programs. I have to press the cancel button about 4 times before it finally stops trying to install the program, but it tells me that the programs it is trying to install must be located on a CD that isn't in the CD tray currently.

2) My system clock is still functioning oddly. By that I mean the display currently reads 01:10 instead of 1:10. It's as if the clock is set to be in a 24 hour mode instead of the mode it was originally set to.

I mention these issues because they did not begin until this program hijacked my desktop. Other than those two issues I seem to be moving in the right direction as it relates to getting control of my computer again. Below are the logs for the two programs you asked for.

Unread postby Xnex » October 17th, 2008, 12:50 am

Peku006

As instructed I have downloaded the program and am posting the contents of each file below. I'm sorry that I keep mentioning problems, but there are two other issues (or maybe non issues, I don't know) that I want to tell you about.

The first issue relates to Microsoft Outlook. When I view the sent items folder and sort it by date, there is an area above the Today section, that says NEXT MONTH. In the next month section are emails that have been sent from the Outlook address today (Friday) and yesterday. I'm not sure how that's possible, and I am certain I have never seen in Outlok, especially in the sent items folder. I have received emails in my gmail or yahoo accouts that show a future date, but I've never seen it in a sent items folder.

The second thing that I noticed occured while I was highlighting the text in the files created by the RSIT program. When I began to highlight the text and I took the cursor to the bottom of the screen it would only highlight the text that was within view on my screen. By that, I mean that usually I can move the cursor to the bottom of my desktop and the highlighting will automatically scroll down until I stop it. When I highlighted the notepad files for RSIT, I had to keep the mouse button pressed down and actually scroll to the bottom of the document by dragging my mouse across my desk several times. Again, I'm not sure how important either of these issues are, but they are just things I have noticed. Thank you again for your time and assistance with this.

Hi Xnex

Logs, looks good but let's run one online scan to be sure

1 - Clean temp files

    Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

    Under Main choose:
      Windows Temp
      Current User Temp
      All Users Temp
      Temporary Internet Files
      Prefetch
      Java Cache

      *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.
    if you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.
    if you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

2 - Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

Peku006

When I go to the Kaspersky site I get the message that Kaspersky is checking my computer configuration. Then I get a pop-up that tells me I need to have Java 1.5 or later to run the program. WHen I follow the link and let it scan my computer it tells me that I currently have the most current version of Java installed already. But the scanner will not continue, it just keeps telling me that I need Java 1.5 or later

Hi Xnex
Let's try this:

  1. Please go to F-Secure website to perform an online scan. Click on Start scanning at the bottom of the page.
  2. You may be prompted to install an ActiveX before you are able to accept the License Agreement. If prompted, please install it. After installing, the Accept button will be available.
  3. Click on Accept to accept the License Agreement.
  4. Click on Custom Scan.
    • Under Virus Scan Options, select the Scan whole system option.
    • Under Other Scan Options, select these options:
      • Scan all files
      • Scan whole system for rootkits
      • Scan whole system for spyware
      • Scan inside archives
      • Use advanced heuristics
  5. Click Start.
  6. It will start installing the scanner and virus definitions. Once the installation is done, it will start scanning automatically. This takes a while. Please be patient.
  7. Click on I want decide item by item.
  8. Under Actions, select None for all infections found.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Click on Show Report.
  11. Please copy and paste this report in your next reply.
  12. Click Finish.

Peku006, the file generated by the F-Secure scanner is posted below. Also, even after running the scans; my system clock is still displaying time in a 24hr clock fashion. Right now, it's 10:39 pm, but my clock displays 22:39. Even when I go into the control panel I cannot change the display. Do you have any ideas on what I can do to fix this? Thank you again for all of your help.

Hi Peku006

Things seem to be running quite well as far as I can tell. I'm so sorry that I missed the link in your previous post that explained how to change the time display. I guess I was so concerned with downloading and running the scans that I totally overlooked the link you posted in your earlier reply. Did you see anything in the F-Secure scan that I should be concerned about?

Also, I'm sure you stay pretty busy helping people on this site, but do you think I might be able to PM you and ask a couple of questions about how to handle my computer and protect it? I've probably thought of at least 5-6 questions that I would like to ask but I knew that I needed to focus on the original problem. Now that the threat seems to be removed I would like to know if you could answer a couple of questions on occassion.

Hi Xnex

Great that your machine is running better now, the scans are fine and it looks like your machine is clean

I'm so sorry that I missed the link in your previous post that explained how to change the time display

Ok no problem

Did you see anything in the F-Secure scan that I should be concerned about?

All F-Secure found were cookies and cookies are not dangerous so there should not be any worries

I've probably thought of at least 5-6 questions that I would like to ask

Of course, you can ask........

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Next we remove all used tools.

Please delete Rsit (from your desktop) and C:\Rsit folder

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP or Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
      Secunia Software Inspector
      F-secure Health Check
    • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
    • Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

      Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide

      Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide
    • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
    • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
