Windows Security Alert pop-ups

Unread postby CookieRocks » October 11th, 2008, 8:03 pm

Hi,

I keep getting the subjected pop up every few minutes.

It mentions 'Trojan-Spy.Win32.KeyLogger.aa' Risk Level: CRITICAL, and has lately shanged to other virus names.

I'm quite positive that this is a rouge anti virus pop up. However, I couldnt seem to get rid of it.

I have run a few scans, and I think I've eradicated the problem. I'm no expert, but know a few things that are worth trying. The new HijackThis log is below. Obviously, I'm not sure if everything looks fine enough to say that there is no problem anymore, so if the log can be looked at and if there is something more that I should do, please help me.

Looking at the log myself, there are certain things that I am wary about, I will highlight them in bold, if these are problems then please guide me on sorting it out.

Thanks

Hi Cookie, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

I am sorry that there has been such a delay in getting to your log.

If you still need assistance, please do the following:

Step #1: Please post a new Hijack This Log

  • Launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Step #2: Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

If you have been able to get the problem resolved, please let me know so I can have this topic closed.

Thanks,
Ken

Hello mate. Thanks for replying.

I think that the problem is clear, but then again, I'd be grateful if you would just take a quick look at the logs and ascertain what you think.

The quicker I get this completed, the quicker I can apply to join MRU. I had read that I need to make sure that my PC is clean before I apply.

Cheers.

Re: Windows Security Alert pop-ups

Unread postby ktreffin » October 16th, 2008, 6:26 pm

Hi Cookie,

Glad to hear you are going to join the Uni. Its a great place to be and you will learn an amazing amount of information. Your HijackThis log looks pretty good. Before I give you the All Clear, I would like to do a little poking around just to make sure nothing is hiding.

Before we begin, I need to stress some important points to you.
  • Some of the instructions I will provide may get quite long. I highly recommend that you print a copy of them off or copy them into Notepad.
  • If at any time you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • Please keep in mind that the instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Also, please remember that there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

Ready? Lets go....

Step #1: Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

O24 - Desktop Component 0: Privacy Protection - (no file)

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

I see that you already have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your system. Lets go ahead and run that, but we need to make sure we update it first.

Step #2: Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click on the "Update" tab
  • Click "Check for Updates"
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • After updating, if the program doesn't re-open automatically, please relaunch it.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

*===============================================*

Step #3: Download and Run Random's System Information Tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

*===============================================*

Step #4: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • Contents of the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
  • Contents of both of the RSIT logs (log.txt and info.txt)

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Windows Security Alert pop-ups

Unread postby ktreffin » October 17th, 2008, 9:39 am

Hi Cookie,

I am glad that Malwarebytes' found what it did. There are a couple of things in your RSIT logs that I need to find out about......

In your RSIT log, I found this:

2008-09-24 00:00:07 ----A---- C:\WINDOWS\Adobe Master CS4 Collection Keygen.exe

I would like to draw your attention to this:
http://www.malwareremoval.com/rules.php

Specifically, this portion:
Any time the helper detects that you may have illegal software on your machine, that helper may stop assisting you immediately until you can demonstrate that you have rectified the situation. We will not support fixing machines with pirated or otherwise illegal software.

I can't help but to notice that you have quite an extensive list of Adobe products installed, and I just want to make sure that you are aware of the rules.

I also need to address this:

2008-09-29 18:44:04 ----D---- C:\Program Files\BitLord

I also would like you to review this information:

Use of P2P (Person to Person) file sharing programs

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
  • If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. We will withdraw our help should you not agree to their removal.
  • If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programmes, we will refuse our help.

We do not ask you to do this without reason.

P2P programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realize. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates perfectly the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programs, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

Can you please give me a little insight to these things? Once we get these issues cleared up, then we will continue.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi,

In regards to your reply. I wasn't aware that the CS4 Keygen was on my PC, I believe it may have been possibly done whilst I was away a couple weeks back.

Furthermore, the 'extensive' range of Adobe products I have, are CS3 products not CS4, thus you can rule out me having used a CS4 keygen.

In terms of Bitlord, I have never used it, however I believe it was installed on the PC by a nephew during the same period I was away. I promptly removed it the minute I came across the installed program.

Hi Cookie,

Thank you for straightening that out. I saw those entries in the log so I had to ask. I hope you understand.

As far as your log goes, I really don't see anything malicious. That one line that I had you fix earlier seems to be still lingering so we will go after that again. Otherwise lets get one more scan just to make sure I am not missing anything.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website to perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to your desktop by changing the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Now close the window.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan log

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken,

I did delete the keygen from the Windows Directory and it seems that the Bitlord entry was pointing to the Program Files directory folder which I also removed, it seems that even though the program itself was uninstalled, the directory folder remained.

Kaspersky isn't working, It just seems to get stuck. Is there another online scanner that you recommend. I also removed that entry from hijackthis, but I it keeps coming back. I will post the HJT log. What other scanner should I use?

** I retried Kaspersky, and it seems to have started working again. Will post the report soon as its complete.

In the meanwhile, please review the HJT log below and advise on the removal of that entry.

OK, for now don't worry about that 024 line. We will come back to it. If you are still having trouble with Kaspersky, please do an ESET scan instead:

Step #1: Run ESET Online Scan

Hi Cookie,

I am curious to see what kind of leftovers we are dealing with....Please do the following:

Download and Run SmitfraudFix

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Run the file, it will extract Smitfraudfix to its own folder and run.

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post the contents of the SimtFraudFix report in the next reply.

Thanks,
Ken

Please copy the fix to Notepad/Word, or print it, because you won't always have internet access!

Step #1: Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

Step #2: Run SmitfraudFix

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Step #3: Delete Temporary files

Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

Quit Internet Explorer, all browsers and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.

For Internet Explorer 7
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete... under Browsing History.
  • Next to Temporary Internet Files, click Delete files, and then click OK.
  • Next to Cookies, click Delete cookies, and then click OK.
  • Next to History, click Delete history, and then click OK.
  • Click the Close button.
  • Click OK.
For Internet Explorer 4.x - 6.x
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box, and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
For Netscape 4.x and Up
  • Click Edit from the Netscape menubar.
  • Click Preferences... from the Edit menu.
  • Expand the Advanced menu by clicking the triangle sign.
  • Click Cache.
  • Click both the Clear Memory Cache and the Clear Disk Cache buttons.
For Mozilla 1.x and Up
  • Click Edit from the Mozilla menubar.
  • Click Preferences... from the Edit menu.
  • Expand the Advanced menu by clicking the plus sign.
  • Click Cache.
  • Click the Clear Cache button.
For Opera
  • Click File from the Opera menubar.
  • Click Preferences... from the File menu.
  • Click the History and Cache menu.
  • Click the two Clear buttons next to Typed in addresses and Visited addresses (history) and click the Empty now button to clear the Disk cache.
  • Click Ok to close the Preferences menu.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

Step #4: Reboot your computer

It'll automatically switch to Normal Mode.

Step #5: Post logs

Please post:
  • c:\rapport.txt
