I have the programs now and I will post the results of the scans tomorrow. Sorry about the delay. I meant to do it today but I have temporarily lost the electricity from my flat.

I'm sorry to hear that, sounds very inconvenient. If you have any difficulties with the scans please let me know.

As I say, the machine is running pretty well at the moment; there don't seem to be any serious problems.

Many thanks for your help.

Re: want to verify that my home computer is clean

Unread postby silver » October 13th, 2008, 10:40 pm

Hi Rupert,

Dr Web has detected something but it appears to be a false positive. Please upload it for checking so we can double-check this:
Open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit- ... channel=32

Fill in the link to topic field with a link to this topic
Copy/paste the following into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:
C:\MiKTeX\miktex\bin\texmfstart.exe
Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, the unidentified startup entry has returned, so please repeat these instructions:

Highlight the following command (it's one long command) and copy it to the clipboard by pressing CTRL-C:
regedit /e "%userprofile%\desktop\look2.txt" HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
Then press Start, click in the Search box, press CTRL-V to paste the command and press Enter.
Allow the UAC prompt when it appears, and a file should appear on your Desktop called look2.txt.

Please attach this to your next post - under the text posting area use the Browse button to locate look2.txt then press Add the file to upload it.
If you have any problems please let me know.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and attach the look2.txt output.

I've been trying to attach the look2.txt file quite a few times but I'm having a bit of an issue, whenever I try to attach it it asks me to log in again and I have to start from scratch. I'm not sure what's the best way of dealing with that. I've tried switching Tor off but that just means I can't log in at all. Perhaps I need to fix my browser settings in some way; I don't know if you have any helpful suggestions for that.

Hi,

Looks like you got the file attached fine, good job :) however it looks like it was performed from a different user account than the one I am looking for.

How many user accounts do you have on this machine? It looks like you have at least two. Please repeat the export/attach instructions for each user account:

User account #1:
Highlight the following command (it's one long command) and copy it to the clipboard by pressing CTRL-C:
regedit /e "%userprofile%\desktop\look3.txt" HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
Then press Start, click in the Search box, press CTRL-V to paste the command and press Enter.
Allow the UAC prompt when it appears, and a file should appear on your Desktop called look3.txt.

User account #2:
Highlight the following command (it's one long command) and copy it to the clipboard by pressing CTRL-C:
regedit /e "%userprofile%\desktop\look4.txt" HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
Then press Start, click in the Search box, press CTRL-V to paste the command and press Enter.
Allow the UAC prompt when it appears, and a file should appear on your Desktop called look4.txt.

User account #3 (if necessary):
Highlight the following command (it's one long command) and copy it to the clipboard by pressing CTRL-C:
regedit /e "%userprofile%\desktop\look5.txt" HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
Then press Start, click in the Search box, press CTRL-V to paste the command and press Enter.
Allow the UAC prompt when it appears, and a file should appear on your Desktop called look5.txt.

Please attach the resulting output files to your next response.

Do you know what these entries are related to?

"捁牥吠畯r"=""
"捁牥吠畯⁲敒業摮牥"="㩃䅜散屲捁牥潔牵剜浥湩敤⹲硥e"

They are startup entries from the 'look3.txt' user account.

Hi. Sorry. No, I don't know what those would be. I am running this computer in China but I don't know of any reason why Chinese characters would show up in the look3.txt file.

Hi Rupert,

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start->Control Panel->Uninstall a program/Programs and Features
Search all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
(They should have this icon next to it: Image)
Remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 10), from here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right-click the HijackThis program or shortcut, and choose Run as administrator to start the program
Choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Chinese entries don't appear to be malware, but I can't positively ID them either. I recommend you disable them and if you don't experience any problems with your machine, then I would leave them disabled.

Please login as the user with the Chinese entries and do as follows:

Download Autoruns to your Desktop
  • Right-click Autoruns.zip, choose Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract the program to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, right-click autoruns.exe and select Run as administrator to start the program
  • Wait for it to finish scanning. When it is complete, the status bar at the bottom will change from "Scanning..." to "Ready."
  • Select the Logon tab, scroll to locate the Chinese character entries under the section:
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • Remove the checkmark next to these two entries.
  • Close Autoruns

If for any reason you wish to re-enable these entries, you can do so by repeating this procedure and replacing the check-marks next to the entries.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log from the above user's account and let me know how your machine is running now.
