Win32/VMalum.DTAQ infection

Unread postby wanguy2k » September 15th, 2008, 10:56 pm

First time here, hopefully I won't break any rules.

Trying to get a trojan off a client's PC:

This is from the CA Antivirus real-time virus log. I quarantines the trojan when it becomes active, but doesn't kill it. I tried Malwarebytes, Kaspersky, Stopzilla, they don't clean it. Some call it a different trojan (I don't think there's more than one.)

9/15/2008 19:13:47 PM File infection: C:\windows\temp\6fS2Vy64.exe is Win32/VMalum.DTAQ infection.

Here's the hijack log.

Hi wanguy2k

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Here are the two files produced by RSIT. Let me know if you find anything. I'm still following up with CA, but I can't get the to call me back even after paying for a support call.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Done. Attached is the log file. It looks like everything was deleted. Should this have killed the trojan? Was it in one of the .job files?

Unread postby wanguy2k » September 23rd, 2008, 4:09 pm

I just checked with the client and they don't seem to be having any problems anymore. I'll check back tomorrow and see if it's really gone.

So I take it the trojan was using task scheduler jobs to reinstall itself, maybe from a web site, and that's why the machine scanned clean after deleting the running program?

I'd like to get a look at one of those .job files.

I'll post tomorrow and let you know if it's resolved. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Thanks for your help Shaba.

Yes it was using task scheduler.

We will do an online scan to be sure:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Due to Lack of Response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
