Welcome superprostar78

I will be helping you under the guidance of one of our expert coaches.
Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
Please Note: My instructions to you are checked by an expert prior to posting. This may cause a small delay between posts.
Thanks

Create an Uninstall List
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file
  • When you press the Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file
  • Copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply

Re: spyware detected on your computer

Unread postby jmw3 » September 17th, 2008, 9:56 am

Hello superprostar78

No Anti-virus
Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of anti-virus software.
Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

Your computer must have only ONE antivirus program installed at any time. Having more than one antivirus program installed and active will cause program conflicts, false virus alerts, and system crashes.

Fix HiJackThis Entries
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on do a system scan only
  • Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present):

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SVCHOST.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\svchost.exe

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.

ATF Cleaner

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware here and save to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Re: spyware detected on your computer

Unread postby jmw3 » September 17th, 2008, 8:07 pm

Hello superprostar78

Logs look good. Well done, however I still don't see any evidence of Anti-virus software. Is there a reason for this? Having an Anti-virus program running will greatly reduce the risk of your computer getting infected again. Please download & install ONE of the free Anti-virus programs I suggested previously.
Please read: Top Ten excuses why people don't want to secure their computer and why they are wrong.

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program
up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 7.
JavaRa
Download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK
  • A logfile will pop up. Save it to a convenient location
  • Click on Additional Tasks then tick Remove Useless JRE Files
  • Click Go then OK when prompted & close the program.
Update Java Runtime
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on the Download button
  • In the Platform box choose Windows
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop
  • Install the new version by running the downloaded file with the Java icon & follow the on-screen instructions
  • Reboot your computer

Kaspersky Online Scan
Please use Internet Explorer for this scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log

Hi superprostar78

I really appreciate your help.

No problem at all.

Just before we finish up, a couple of quick questions. Is your computer currently behind a Router? Is that why don't have any Anti-virus installed? If that's the case is the router's firewall configured correctly? If you are behind a router could you let me know what type it is & we maybe able to assist in configuring it.

And what about the computer's firewall? I don't see any evidence of a third party firewall so I assume your using the XP firewall. Do you have that enabled?

Now that your computer is clean you really need some sort of protection to stop any more malicious attacks.
If this is not the case could you let me know what you are doing to protect your computer.
Thanks

Hi jmw3,

I just installed Avast on the computer. I am using a Linksys WGRT54GP2 wireless router and everything seems to be running ok. I'm currently just using the xp firewall.

I do have a question for you that I haven't been able to find much info on relating to reformatting the hard drive. I do have the system restore disc for this computer. If you use the restore disc and restore the computer to its initial state (not reformatting the drive), does this eliminate malware, or do you need to do the full reformat, reinstall?

Again, Thanks for all your help. You saved me lots of time + stress :)

Excellent, good to hear.

If you were to go down this path then a full reformat & re-install would be the surest way to eliminate malware. Resetting to Factory Settings is a non-destructive repair which means it does not destroy any data you may have saved. So you really couldn't guarantee that all the malware would be eliminated.
Again, Thanks for all your help. You saved me lots of time + stress

No problem at all. If I could just see a final HijackThis log please.

All Clean
Congratulations, good work, your system is now clean. Now that your system is safe we would like you to keep it that way.
Take the time to follow these instructions and it will greatly reduce the risk of further infections and greatly diminish the chances of you having to visit here again.

Create a Clean System Restore Point
Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close
Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and click OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files & Temporary Internet Files are checked. You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore click Clean up... and click Yes to the prompt
Click OK and Yes to confirm.

Microsoft Windows Update
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Install the updates immediately if they are found.
To update Windows
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update
To update Office
Open up any Office program.
Go to Help > Check for Updates

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.
Keep it updated & use it to perform regular scans to keep your computer free of malicious files & programs.

SpywareBlaster
Download and install Javacools SpywareBlaster from here
SpywareBlaster adds a list of ActiveX controls, tracking cookies and sites which will be blocked in either Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. You need to manually check for updates regularly.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):
  • A short distance down the page in the centre, click on the Download button
  • Agree to the license
  • On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word Hosts Manager choose Save Target As and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop
  • Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager
  • After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop)
  • When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the right side of the bar labeled Options and Tools,
  • Click Disable DNS Service. This is important
  • In the Left Pane, click Download
  • It will load 80,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.
If you have a separate party firewall or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.

Install WinPatrol
Download it here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Read some information here on how to prevent Malware.

Hopefully these steps will help keep your computer clean.
