Apparently I had a good amount of temporary files -- nearly half a gig. I was surprised because I normally run the disk cleanup program that comes with windows every Friday (though I haven't since I've been getting help for you), and I thought that removed temporary files. Would it be unwise to start running ATF regularly?

Here are the logs:

Hi jkramer7,

Looks good. Nice job on doing everything. It would be OK if you want to keep ATF and run that periodically. It is a good tool to get things cleaned up. How is the machine running? Are you still having any problems?

I did notice in the RSIT log that you do have P2P installed. I need to warn you about this and suggest you remove them:

Use of P2P (Person to Person) file sharing programs

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.
  • If your helper detects the presence of such programs on your computer he/she will ask you to remove them. We will withdraw our help should you not agree to their removal.
  • If we clean your computer of infection, and you return to us a short time later with an infection contracted by the use of P2P programmes, we will refuse our help.

We do not ask you to do this without reason.

P2P programs form a direct conduit onto your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented, and Malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares onto your computer. Further to that, if your P2P programme is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's Passwords, Address Books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured programme.

This article from InfoWorld illustrates perfectly the dangers of a poorly configured P2P program.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html

Many of the programs come bundled with other unwanted programs, but even the ones free of any bundled software are not safe to use.

When you use them you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. Hardly surprising then that many of these Downloads are being targeted to carry infections.

We see no purpose in cleaning your machine if you use P2P programs, as it is pretty much certain that if you continue to use them then you will get infected again.

You have the following P-2-P program(s) installed
    BitTorrent
    LimeWire

This is how you uninstall it/them:

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):[

    BitTorrent
    LimeWire

NOTE: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Let me know how things are running, and what kind of problems you are still having.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken,
Before posting my problem I read the policy on p2p programs, and I uninstalled them then. I just confirmed that they are not in my uninstall list, so what do I need to do to remove the remnants that you are noticing?

For problems I'm still noticing, there is still outgoing spam when I first start up my computer, but it stops after about 40 messages (according to Avast's logs) [edit: it appears to come from the process services.exe, but I couldn't say that with certainty]. Additionally, Avast displays a pop up message saying it has detected a rootkit every time I boot up the machine. It calls it Wi\Program Files if that helps you. It gives me the option to delete it, but I have so far just closed the window every time.

As long as you have removed the P2P we are good. The entries in the RSIT log are under "Approved Applications" for your firewall. We are good to continue. Thanks for clearing that up for me.....

Let's see if we can find anything about the reported root kit first, and then we will try and tackle the e-mail issue.

Download and Run BLACKLIGHT
  • Please download F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) from here
  • Save into C:\ with a name of fsbl.exe
  • Go to Start > Run
  • Copy and paste the contents of the below codebox into the run box
    Code: Select all
    C:\fsbl.exe /expert
  • Click OK
  • This will launch BlackLight
  • Select I accept the agreement
  • Click Next
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Click on Next>
  • Click Exit
  • A logfile will have been created in the C:\ drive
  • It will be named fsbl-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the date and time of the scan
  • Use notepad to open that log
  • Post the contents of that log as a reply to this topic together with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks,
Ken

When Avast gives you the warning about the RootKit is it giving you a location? A filename? or any additional information about it?

It gives C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\a3284e2.sys as the file name, and says Wi\Program Files\ is the name of the malware. It does give me the option to delete it.

Please download and run ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

That one was intense. I'm not sure if its just a coincidence, but there hasn't been any outgoing spam since the scan, but avast still detects the rootkit.

It looks like Combofix found a couple of files, however obviously the problem still exists. ComboFix did reveal the location of that driver that Avast is flagging. Lets see if we can take care of that......

I would really like to see if that driver is in fact the culprit, so lets get a closer look:

Step #1: Upload malware for scanning

I'd like you to check a file/some files for malware.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\a3284e2.sys

  • Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Save the complete results in a Notepad/Word document on your desktop.
  • Repeat for all files on the list.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Run CFScript
Close any open browsers and close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Code: Select all
Driver::
a3284e2
aosrum8n

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\a3284e2.sys
C:\WINDOWS\taskman.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aosrum8n.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

*===============================================*

Step #3: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • Contents of the Jotti or Virus Total Results
  • Contents of the ComboFix Log

Thanks,
Ken

All kinds of trouble this time.

Neither online scan worked for me. Jotti said the file couldn't be found, and VirusTotal took ages to upload, then the page it redirected me to never loaded (after several attempts).

I proceeded to combofix, and sometime during it's scan there was an error and the computer dumped its memory. I'm not sure how far the scan got, but there is not a C:\combofix.txt logfile, and my clock formatting has not been returned (which I'm not sure how to do manually)

I thought that maybe I should run combofix again, but I wasn't sure.

Don't run ComboFix again, in fact don't run anything again. I am going to let another expert take a look at this and see if we can figure out what is going on...

Just hang in there.....I will post back as soon as I can.

I believe that Avast was actually interfering with running combofix. We need to disable Avast and then run ComboFix again.....

Please disable Avast self-defense module:

Image

Once you have that disabled please do the following:

Step #1: Run CFScript
Close any open browsers and close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Code: Select all
Driver::
a3284e2
aosrum8n

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\a3284e2.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aosrum8n.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
