Unread postby miranda » August 28th, 2008, 10:51 pm

hi. thanks in advance for the help. every time i start up i get a window opening that says "common" with a "helper.dl" file in it. this just started recently, within the past week and a half. i have heard many different things, and do not know what to do. is this file safe? if it is safe, how do i get it to stop opening on it's own? if it isn't safe, how do i get rid of it? i also think i have other things going on to slow me down, and if u have any input on what i should do about that as well, i would appreciate it.
thanks again,
miranda

Hi miranda,

It appears there is some malware causing this problem, we can begin cleaning as follows:

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Hi miranda,

We need to temporarily disable Spybot's Tea Timer as it may interfere with changes we need to make to your machine:

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode

  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 7) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
Viewpoint Media Player can be removed via Add/Remove Programs

Neopets has been reported as being adware related and the cause of internet connection issues so I recommend you remove it. To do so, find Neopets and select Remove

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

Re: helper.dll opens every time i start up

Unread postby silver » September 7th, 2008, 10:14 pm

Hi miranda,

except for removing neopets, i am kinda addicted to it
That's OK, it's not a seriously evil program, but please keep in mind that advertising networks are sometimes used to spread malware, and in the future if you have internet connection problems you should try temporarily removing this program to see if it resolves the problem.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The OTMoveIt log wasn't quite like I was expecting, did you run it two or more times?
If so, please open this folder and post a copy of every .log file in your next response:
C:\_OTMoveIt

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, please open Windows Update in Internet Explorer and download all the Important and Critical updates. If there are a few to install this may take a little while but please make sure all are installed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Eset report and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your machine is running now.

ugh, yes, had some trouble when i was trying to post a response earlier lol, i'm a spaz at times :P...logged myself out on accident mid-reply, and also did something else...not even sure what it was now, but yeah i didn't realize it would give different results.

No problem, the other logs you posted look fine.

Once you have done the Eset scan please post the log along with a new HijackThis log, and tell me how things are running now.

Did you follow the instructions for opening the log in Notepad using Start->Run?

If you have problems copy/pasting from Notepad, then save the log to your Desktop and attach it to your post.

Re: helper.dll opens every time i start up

Unread postby silver » September 12th, 2008, 9:46 pm

Hi miranda,

You're most welcome :)

To help me sort out the "helper.dll" problem, please try the following:
- Is the window which appears a dialog box? This is a window which give you information and displays a button like "OK" to close it. If so, please reboot your system and note down everything that appears in the box and tell me in your next response.

- Is the window an Explorer window? This is when we open a folder on the system like My Documents to view files. If so, please reboot your system and note the exact filename of the file you see (e.g. helper.dll) and the full path from the address bar of the window - it should look something like this:
C:\Program Files\Common Files

Next, please open OTMoveIt again and paste the following into the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" area:
C:\Documents and Settings\carmen\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi
Then press the MoveIt button.
Please post the results in your next response.

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir "C:\*helpe*.dll" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt" 2>>&1
A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look.txt.

Re: helper.dll opens every time i start up

Unread postby miranda » September 14th, 2008, 12:15 am

hi! ok, it isn't a dialog box, so it must be an explorer window. there is not an address bar at the top. it looks like the same window as when i open my documents, or my pictures. i looked at it's properties:
type: File Folder
location: C:\Program Files
size: 272 KB (278,540 bytes)
size on disk: 276 KB (282,624 bytes)
contains: 1 files, 0 folders
created: Saturday, August 23, 2008, 1:42:42 AM
in the window there's the little icon, and it says "helper.dll" in black, and underneath that in grey it says "3.0.1.4"
this is from otmoveit2:
C:\Documents and Settings\carmen\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\tmp moved successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\carmen\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar moved successfully.

C:\Documents and Settings\carmen\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\ext moved successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\carmen\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0 moved successfully.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.3 log created on 09132008_210304

honestly, i am not sure if it just happened that i went to move my cursor and the black window closed at the same time, or if i accidentally closed it. i didn't want to just run it again, so i will post what i got from that. if u want me to re-run it, please tell me.

Re: helper.dll opens every time i start up

Unread postby silver » September 14th, 2008, 12:39 am

Hi miranda,

Thanks for the information :)

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller by Merjin to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Right click the downloaded BFU folder, and choose Extract All
  • Click Next and follow the prompts to extract the program to a new folder on your Desktop called bfu
  • Then, Right-click here select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save to save DeepDive.bfu to your Desktop
  • When the download is complete, drag DeepDive.bfu into the new bfu folder
  • Then open the bfu folder and double-click bfu.exe to start the program
  • Next to the scriptline to execute field, click the folder icon and select DeepDive.bfu
  • Press Execute to run the script. (Do not be alarmed if you see your taskbar disappear for a short time - this is normal)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press Exit to terminate the BFU program.
  • A logfile will be created here:
    C:\BFUlogdeepdive.txt
Please post the contents in your next response along with a new HijackThis log
