Hi saxon,

Things are looking better now, but an outdated version of Java still appears to be installed.
Please confirm whether you have removed all older version and if you have had any difficulty with this let me know.

Has the wireless connection problem improved at all?

Performance Update

Unread postby saxon » August 31st, 2008, 2:43 am

I must have missed the Java 5 update. I have now deleted this. Is Java considered a potential threat? Do I have to regularly check if any updates have been installed?

The wireless problem has not come up so far. Is the computer rid of the trofan file and is it safe now?

Hi,

Is Java considered a potential threat? Do I have to regularly check if any updates have been installed?
Java Runtime can be activated by websites, so if there is a security vulnerability in any Java version on your machine, it can be exploited by a malicious site to infect your machine. Each new version of Java fixes security vulnerabilities, so it's extremely important to keep up to date, and it's auto-update mechanism isn't considered very reliable. So yes, it's important to regularly check for updates and if you don't use it, then it's best removed from your machine.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the above went well and everything is running well, then I think your machine is clean of malware :) here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.

I keep getting a System information dialogue box say there are 796 viruses on your computer and a programme has automatically installed itself on my machine. However I have been through add remove programmes and I have not been able to locate it within this section. There is a shortcut on my desktop call "Anitviru XP 2008. Some of the viruses that it lists, are :-

SillyDL Spyware
MatCash BG Trojan high
QQPass I Password Catcher
New.Net.Domain.Plugin Spyware

I keep getting hit with advertising messages some of which are really dont's seem to close insetead they try to install some sort of a programme which claims will clean up my computer. Though I'm not conviced that downloading anythin now is going to do more harm than good.

Many Thanks for all your help so far but I'm afraid I still need some more advise on how to get rid of these malwares.

Hi Saxon,

I'm afraid I still need some more advise on how to get rid of these malwares.
To be honest, I think you need some further help with prevention. It's been a matter of days since the machine appeared to be clean, do you know or do you have suspicions of how you were reinfected? What were you doing just before the infection occurred?

I keep getting a System information dialogue box say there are 796 viruses on your computer
You can ignore these messages, they are false positives designed to get you to purchase a rogue program. The messages should stop shortly.

  • Please open Malwarebytes Antimalware, if you need to download it again, you can do so from here:
    http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
  • Select the Updates tab and click the Check for updates button to update the program
  • Once it has been updated, select the Scanner tab, select Perform full scan, click Scan, select all hard drives and press Start Scan
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Malwarebytes Antimalware report and both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Re: Hijack This Log file - Please advise next step ......

Unread postby silver » September 1st, 2008, 3:57 am

Hi Saxon,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:

  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps

This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winmsgapl] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mtkrazet.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [s9201] "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Secure Solutions\Antispyware 2008 XP\as2008xp.exe" /autorun
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [EnSh] C:\WINDOWS\system32\epujynwv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [I9TD1FlDX9] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\wfyjkvmh\ahuxmhoh.exe
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Complete Clean Reboot

Unread postby saxon » September 1st, 2008, 4:01 pm

Hi Silver,

I would love to format the hard drive however I don't have any original Winsdows CD to reinstall the Windows Operating System.

Should I ask my manufacturer to provide me with a CD? Why is it that these companies no longer provide a system CD or perhaps I have been conned......
