Havoc! - "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer!"

Unread postby Crunchyhippo » August 14th, 2008, 7:58 pm

Somehow I got this spyware/malware and it's nasty! It says "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer!" on the screen in a box. I can't get past the blue splash warning screen, and even in safe mode my system was crashing after a few minutes, requiring a reboot.

Others seem to have this same problem, I see, and I did a Hijackthis scan, too - however, I didn't seem to find the same problem lines in my output that others had, so I didn't want to run a Combofix without finding something first. Perhaps someone can assist.

FYI, I can only operate this computer in Safe Mode.

Here is my Hijackthis output:

Hi Crunchyhippo

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

After that, post back a fresh HijackThis log taken in normal mode, please :)

Re: Havoc! - "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer!"

Unread postby Crunchyhippo » August 15th, 2008, 12:25 pm

I installed one of the recommended anti-virus programs. I tried to run it in safe mode, but as it runs, the system crashes, like it sometimes does just trying to get around in safe mode (and the system never crashed in normal mode before I got this malware).

Btw, when I try to boot up in normal mode, I can't even get to the programs before I get the message "Warning - Spyware detected on your computer.....Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer." It's a yellow box message on a light blue background, and I can't get past it. Once again, I can only operate on this computer right now in safe mode.

I ran another Hijackthis scan and the output is below. Thanks again.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

I think it worked! At least I can now boot my computer up normally. It took four tries, though, to get the SDfix program to start, since once the black box window for the program opened, my computer would crash every time. Finally got it going. No doubt this malware also caused my computer to crash periodically as a parting gift. Whew.

Here's the SDfix report log; and just look at all the burrowing trojans it excavated!:

Yes much better :)

We will continue with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

A further note - now that I've gotten rid of that nasty 'warning - spyware detected on your computer" message, it seems that I've still got some spyware on the computer.

This is a program peddling itself as "System Defender," and it's popping up incessently.

What do you recommend? I guess I didn't get rid of everything.

Due to Lack of Response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
