So yesterday I managed to get infected with Vundo and Antivirus XP 2008 (at the very least). It instantly took over my laptop and I started looking for options to fix the problem. I came across several fixes which included a few virus and spyware detectors. Nothing seemed to help and at this point it was taking me several tries to get into Safe Mode (which I can't do at all now) or normal windows. Eventually I found Combofix which I downloaded to a USB drive and plugged into my laptop. As it clearly states the risk of running ComboFix I had no intention of running it. However when I clicked on the icon to open it - it automatically started a scan and reboot and all that. I didn't want to interrupt because I thought that might make things worse. The good news is there is no trace of any of the viruses. The bad news is most of my files are gone - video, pictures, music, docs - all missing. Some of my programs seem to be gone as well. Additionally when I logged into my user profile it was if I was doing so for the first time. All of my settings were back to the default and I needed to set up some programs like I had never used them before. As much as I am glad the virus is gone at this point I'm still pretty screwed. I have back ups of some files but most are missing. Any ideas what happened here? Combofix created a restore point before it did it's thing. Should I just go back and restore to that point and deal with the virus again? Do you think that would work or is something else responsible for the files missing? Any help is appreciated, although I have a feeling I'm totally screwed here.
***Update: I ran a data recovery program and all of the files I'm missing showed up. However I'm hesitant to recover them as I assume they might be infected. Also I don't want save them over any other lost files on the drive. However I do need most of them back.
***Update 2: OK, so the files were not deleted. The reason my settings and were off is because Windows create a new folder for my settings. Basically it rerouted the user file to a new one. The old one is still there but is no longer the controlling the profile. So I didn't lose any files or programs I just couldn't find them the normal way. If anyone has any solutions for returning my settings to normal without going through the process of transferring everything let me know.
