Hello, I am turtledove,
Welcome to the forum

I will be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis and other logs take awhile to research. Please be patient with me. I know that you want your problems solved quickly, and I will work hard to help you.

As an Undergraduate, my posts will be checked first by A Teacher or Expert. Please be patient, I'll post a fix soon.
***Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference and an easy way to find for answering.
Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic. Please stay at one forum for help.
3. Please continue reading posts until I give the All Clear. It is important to note this, as a clean looking HijackThis is not always a sign your system is clean.
4. Always Copy/Print out ALL Instructions.

If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
*Please do not run any fixes on your own, as they may interfere with our work.
*If you are going to be busy and *unable to post for more than 5 days* please post in this thread so we know and do not close this thread.

*Please Note: If you do not respond with a note that you need more time and you have not responded in 5 days, the thread will be closed as inactive.*

I am currently researching your log and will reply as soon as possible.
Thanks for your patience!

Please make an Uninstall list :
To access the Uninstall Manager, please do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Unread postby turtledove » August 12th, 2008, 1:54 am

Hello learner10,

Thank for posting the list.

Please Copy to Notepad or Print out ALL instructions.
You will need to disconnect from the internet for part of this fix.

Download SDFix
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

----------------
REMOVE P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Ares 2.0.9

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red) NOW.

----------------
Please Post:
Report.txt
New HijackThis log

Thank you,

Re: Malware Removal IE Critical Update Needed.

Unread postby turtledove » August 14th, 2008, 3:13 pm

Hello learner10,

**Thank you for the logs. Please review the following about P2P programs.
Please reread the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain P2P (peer to peer) file sharing programmes, and that they must be removed.

There is more work to clean up, but it requires you uninstall ALL P2P Programs:
Please remove Ares, BitTorrent, BitTorrent_DNA as instructed in my earlier post.
Stated Here: viewtopic.php?p=335066#p335066
Post :
New HijackThis please

Thank you

Hello learner10,

**Ares P2P is still present in your log.
Rerun HijackThis and do a scan only:
Place a check mark in:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\Program Files\Ares\Ares.exe" -h
With all other Windows closed, Click Fix Checked, then Exit when done.
Reboot Computer

If Ares is Not in your Add/Remove Programs to remove, do the following:
open My Computer and click the Program Files folder.
Open the Ares Folder: if no uninstall then Right Click on Ares Folder and Select Delete. Empty Recycle bin afterward.

First
You have 2 Anti Virus Programs running:
Please use Add/Remove Programs to Remove Norman Virus Control
**This is important:Running to Active Anti Virus Programs WILL cause conflict and slow down your PC as well as cause issues in identifying threats.

Next
I Do Not see A firewall running: This is very important. Here is a FREE Firewall suggestion: Pick only One* The Firewall in XP is only a one way monitor; you need a two way monitor to block the bad from "Calling Home".
Online Armor
Comodo Personal Firewall

After these are done, we will proceed with cleaning.
