Hijackthis log. Is there malware on my system?

Unread postby MacacaFascicula » August 7th, 2008, 9:01 am

Hello,
I'm having few issues with my windows xp pro, which lead me to this forum.

1)My explorer.exe shuts down randomly. Sometimes it will restart itself.
2) I am unable to use windows update. When I try to enable automatic update in services, it disables itself.

I have ran VundoFix.exe. It found and fixed 19 files. However, I'm continuing to have the same issues.

I have a PowerSepc 9262:
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 550 with HT Technology
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Edition
Intel® D915PGN
2.87 GB PC3200 SDRAM 184-pin DIMMs
Nvidea GeForce 8600GT

Here is my Hijackthis log:

Hi MacacaFascicula,
Just before we start any fixes could you please let me know, if you have installed these two desktops:

http://images.vinylpulse.com/vp_pics/re ... emon_b.jpg
http://ic3.deviantart.com/fs15/i/2006/3 ... zkexis.jpg

If not please follow the below instructions:

Go to start > control panel > Display (Display properties) > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab
Uncheck and delete everything you find in there. (except for "My current home page")

-----------------------------------------------
You aren't running Anti Virus Software

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

----------------------------------------------------

Download and Run ComboFix

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Additional links to download the tool:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. A guide to do this can be found here.
The ones that need to be closed/disabled are:
    SPYBOT
Whichever anti-virus you choose to download

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Hello,

Sorry for such a late reply, however I was unable to use my computer for sometime. I have been having other issues after downloading Avira Antivir.

-I did as you asked. I deleted the two .jpg files.
-downloaded Avira Antivir
-downloaded Combofix.exe

I was getting this pop up from Avira saying:

C:\windows\system32\qlwtycxf.dll
Is the TR\Vundo.Gen Trojan

And it would give me options to Move to quarantine, delete, rename, deny access or ignore. So I picked delete and another pop up would pop up. Giving me the same message and options, I picked delete and another popup of the same kind. It was doing this non stop last night, I sat there and hit delete for 10mins or longer. Finally it wouldn’t let me do anything, it would make this beeping noise and that pop up would be on screen and soon my screen would flood with them.

I went into msconfig and disabled qlwtycxf.dll (in safe mode) and it seems to keep those popups away and I am able to be on my computer. However, if I try to run combofix it comes up again. I ignored it and let combofix run for a while, it said Completed Stage_7 and then it didn’t seem to be doing anything after that.

I also followed your link to see how to disable anti software programs. I am unable to do that because I do not see the icon in my system tray. I went into task manger and it says it’s running avguard.exe and I am unable to end that process. Says “access is denied” but I am on a admin account (I am the admin).

In conclusion, I need a way to turn off the anti software so I can run combofix (I think). Downloading Antivir just made things more difficult. I can’t uninstall it, I do not see it in my add/remove programs. I’m thinking maybe I can do a system restore and then try to run combofix?

this is fun =)

REMOVE P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

uTorrent
E-mule

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Post back a new HijackThis, so we can continue cleaning your pc.

Important! Do NOT be tempted to use any tools that your helper had you download. Incorrect use of such tools may see your computer become an expensive paperweight.
