Keylogger Problems

Unread postby Drew0692 » August 4th, 2008, 5:25 pm

Hello there,

Recently I have been having problems maintaining the security on one of my MMORPG accounts. Namely, World of Warcraft. I suspect this is probably the result of a bad addon download. In any case, below I have enclosed details on the situation up until this point.

A couple of weeks ago I awoke one Saturday to find that my WoW account name and password combination did not seem to be working. After a while I began to suspect that my account had been hacked, and sent an email to Blizzard's Account Administration department. Later that afternoon I phoned their billing department to get my password reset and account unlocked (they'd locked it due to suspicious activity). Moving along, the account seemed to be secure for the time being. A few days later the event seemed to have happened all over again. This time I used the automatic password reset feature on the World of Warcraft website. At that time I also began to run my broad spectrum of malware scanners/removers as well as manually removing any suspicious files I encountered. Below are the general steps taken:

- Ran Norton 360 Scanner. A few files were found and removed.
- Downloaded and ran Spybot: Search and Destroy. Several files were found and removed.
- Ran Lavasoft's Ad-Aware program. Again, some files found and removed.
- Uninstalled Several Programs for Misc. Computer Maintenance (Old programs I had no use of. Old computer games, ect.)

Once again my account seemed to be doing alright until just this morning I once again receieved an email from Blizzard Account Administration saying the account had been locked for a duration of 24-hours due to suspicious activities.

I repeated the scans mentioned above and this time also downloaded a trial version of AVG: Anti-Virus. (They no longer have a free version, it seems.) After running several scans it finally picked up on a 'Lovefly.dll' file in the Windows subfolder of the C drive. I had AVG heal (forcefully remove) the file after searching for information on 'Lovefly.dll' file and finding that it is often linked to a keylogger for WoW Accounts. However, I also noticed that in every case there was also a file called 'Smart.dll' which I have been unable to find.

What I am hoping is that I have already removed the keylogger and am now in the clear, however, life always seems to have a way of not turning out how you hope. So, below I have attached a HJT log. Might as well go through the entire PC cleaning process while I'm here, and hopefully I will have a safe account afterwards. Also, since it seems that 'Lovefly.dll' was on my computer, could you enclose some instruction on how to find and remove (if they still exist on my computer) both the 'Lovefly.dll' and 'Smart.dll' files.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Drew0692

Yes there are signs of WoW keylogger.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.

Yes it is fine and expected :)

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark this:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Love - LoveFly.dll (file missing)

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and tell me if you have some problems left?

Don't seem to be any problems but I really won't be able to tell for a few days, see if my account goes untouched.

I believe I uninstalled some version of Norton Internet Security before installing the Norton 360 software. So, yes.

Thank you for info.

In that case you are using two antiviruses and you should uninstall one of them, likely AVG8 as it is a free version.

Please post back a fresh HijackThis log afterwards :)

Due to Lack of Response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
