Popup HELL! Please Help!

I know I have mrofinu572.exe. May have other things. Can't hardly surf the web. Internet is slow and sluggish. Getting either porno popups or popups telling me I'm infected and trying to install programs. Please Help.

BTW, I'm at work now, and work 3pm - 11pm EST. So If I don't post a response to anyones post, I'm either at work, or sleeping, but I plan on staying on top of this till it's resolved. Thanks in advanced.

Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!

Is there some reason you ran HJT in safe mode? If possible post a fresh HJT log running in Normal Mode please.

Create an Uninstall List
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file
  • When you press the Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file
  • Copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply

Thanks John for your help.

Well there are 2 reason why I did it in safe mode. First, I thought I was suppose to :lol: , and second, I'm having a very hard time opening web pages. I tried to respond to this message while in normal mode, but with all the popups and junk, the page kept getting hung. Good thing I have a laptop to fall back on.

I can pretty much only use the web on my infected PC while in safe mode, so when I post a log, I'll have to reboot and do it in safe mode.

When you give me directions, please let me know whether I'm supposed to do it in normal mode or safe mode. I'm new to all this.

As for the "Create an Uninstall List" directions, I did everything you said, but when I got the the part where I press the "Save" button, NO notepad opened. In fact "HijackThis" just closed, and that was it. I tried a few times, and it did the same thing each time. Is there another way to do that?

When you give me directions, please let me know whether I'm supposed to do it in normal mode or safe mode. I'm new to all this.

We will run the tools in Normal Mode unless I tell you otherwise.

As for the uninstall List, navigate to the folder where you saved it. There should be a text file named uninstall_list.txt. If found copy & paste the contents in your next reply. If you can't find it don't worry about, we'll come back to it later.

Rename HiJackThis
There maybe an infection hiding in your log.
  • Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
  • Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to
  • Rename to something like StreetDeacon.exe
  • Right click on StreetDeacon.exe & from the list click Create Shortcut then close the Explorer
  • Delete the old HijackThis shortcut
  • Double click the StreetDeacon shortcut on your desktop to run the program then post back a new Hijackthis log in your next reply.

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 7.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on Download button
  • In Platform box choose Windows
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions
  • Reboot your computer

The "uninstall_list.txt" was never made. When clicked the save button, it didn't ask me where to save it, HJT just closed and that was it. I tried to a search for "uninstall_list.txt", but came up with no results.

I did everything in the order you asked me to, which looks like you want a HJT log, Combo fix log, and another HJT log. I hope thats right. Anyway here goes...

Warning: Please note that this fix is specific for this poster & should not be used by anyone else.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Download ERUNT from here & follow the installation prompts
  • Uncheck Create NTREGOPT desktop icon at the Additional Tasks screen. Click No when prompted to create an ERUNT entry in the startup folder.
  • Double click the Erunt icon on your desktop to open the program then click OK at the prompt
  • Use the default settings unless there is more than one user account. (If more the one user account tick Other open user registries in Backup Options)
  • Click OK
The following instruction should only be carried out if you need to restore the registry backup:
Navigate to the folder where the backup is saved
Double click on ERDNT.exe then OK
When the program opens click OK

Thanks for letting me know. Here's some tips to make your pc more secure:

Microsoft Windows Update
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Please ensure that you visit the following websites regularly or do update your system regularly.
Install the updates immediately if they are found. Reboot your computer if necessary, revisit Windows Update and Office update sites until there are no more updates to be installed.
To update Windows
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update
To update Office
Open up any Office program.
Go to Help > Check for Updates
Alternatively, you can visit the links below to update Windows and Office products.
Windows Update
Office Update

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
Open Internet Explorer click Tools > Options > Security tab > Internet icon to highlight > Custom Level, then select the following options:-
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Click OK, then Apply > OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Anti Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine and that it is kept up to date.
For future reference you could try one of these, both of which have a free version for home, non-networked, single user use.

Firewall
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders.:
1) Comodo
2) Sunbelt/Kerio (Free 30 day full featured evaluation)
3) Agnitum
4) ZoneAlarm (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)
If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

SpywareBlaster
Download and install Javacools SpywareBlaster from here
SpywareBlaster adds a list of ActiveX controls, tracking cookies and sites which will be blocked in either Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. You need to manually check for updates regularly.

Install MVPS Hosts File
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

NOTE : Be sure to disable the service "DNS Client" FIRST to allow the use of large HOSTS files without slowdowns.
If this isn't done first, the next reboot may take a VERY LONG TIME.
This is how to do it. First be sure you are signed in as a user with administrative privileges:
Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
  • Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK
  • Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service - DNS Client
  • Right-Click on the DNS Client service
  • Choose Properties
  • Select the General tab & click on the Stop button
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on Manual
  • Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
