I wanted to let you know what happened when I re-enabled my programs. I did them in the reverse order, so I did Spybot Teatimer first. Then I started on SpySweeper and when I got to web browser shields, Spybot went crazy. Because SpySweeper was trying to reinstall red.clientapps.yahoo and I kept denying the change.

It turned out that my version of SpySweeper is 5.5.7.124 and is slightly different than the description you gave me. Under web browser shields it has IE Hijack, which has IE Home Page and IE Search Page. Well, when you click on the Hijack Shield Options button, you find out that red.clientapps.yahoo is still listed and that you need to restore to defaults, which in my case is microsoft.com.

I went back and forth trying to fix it in Hijack This and it kept reappearing, but after I restored the defaults, it stayed out and I now have a clean Hijack This log, which I am sending you below:

Hello Yvette,

When this thread will close, you can right-click on a link, copy shortcut, and copy/paste in your address bar, and you will go to the site the link is sending you. So that won't be a problem.
----------------------------------------------
You got some lines back.

Please disable your Windows Defender, SpyBot Tea Timer, and SpySweeper again.

When you will enable them, leave Spybot last one so it will not react with the changes.
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] 1
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_06) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_02) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_03) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0004-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_04) -

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following Folder: if found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_04
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
A new HijackThis log.

I did all you asked, but the o16 javas come back. I did it and then reenabled everything and there they were again. I did it again and they were gone. I reenabled windows defender and spysweeper and they still weren't there. Then I reenabled Spybot and they reappeared. As you will see, they have changed, but they are still there. I'm posting two Hijack This logs. The first one was run before enabling Spybot, the second after Spybot.

I'm going to go to your link on learning Spybot and see if I can figure out anything. And by the way, I have nothing in program files and I've done a search of the whole computer and not found any of them. Thanks, Yvette

Hello Yvette,

Ok let's treat this differently. We'll do this Step by Step.
Disable Spybot's Tea Timer, and completely uninstall Spybot.
You can install it later.

Disable Spy Sweeper and Windows defender.
----------------------------------------------
Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0004-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
JavaRa report.
A new HijackThis log.
Do not re-enable any protection programs or re-install Spybot yet.

Re: Need help to clean up after effects of a trojan

Unread postby chryssi2001 » July 31st, 2008, 2:06 am

Hello Yvette,

I believe they are gone now.

But there is something i don't like in your Java.
Try to re-dowload the latest version.
Use Internet Explorer for this.

Please read and follow the instructions very carefully, so it will be installed properly.
-------------------------------------
JAVA INSTALLATION
Please make sure that all programs are closed when installing Java.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  • Check the box that says: Accept License Agreement and Continue.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
  • Reboot your computer.
-------------------------------------
Post back a new HijackThis log.

First is confession time. When you had me download java before, I clicked on online installation with the Sun Download Manager and when that didn't work I looked at your instructions again and clicked remove in my download box and did it the right way with offline installation.

Tonight I tried to be really careful and printed out your instructions, but I clicked on the download link and started downloading before I reread them and realized I was in Firefox. I cancelled the download and went into Internet Explorer and followed your instructions to the letter.

Confession over. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but I'm just giving you total information in case it did.

Here's the problem. When I tried to download it, it asked if I wanted to replace and I said yes. Then I got an error and it wouldn't continue with the download. The error message is:

Internal Error 2753. RegUtils

I rebooted and ran a Hijack This log. I will do nothing else and I will follow everything you tell me very slowly and carefully.

Thank you for your help, your carefulness and your patience, Yvette

Unread postby chryssi2001 » August 1st, 2008, 1:02 am

Hello Yvette,

I thought there was something wrong during the 1st download, as all those 016 lines referring to Java weren't suppose to show there, when you download only the new version.

It looks ok now.

I just want you to do something for me.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following File:

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\ssv.dll

Just tell me if it's there.

I have ssvagent, but no ssv.dll. (I noticed those missing files in the Hijack This log.)

I also have a regutils.dll, which is the error message I got, whatever that means. Yvette

Hello Yvette,

Strange you are clean, and we are fighting to install Java properly
I also have a regutils.dll, which is the error message I got, whatever that means

Is this message something like that file can't be found?
That's a file of an older version of Java which is already removed.
No it's not. I already looked. Yvette

I thought so.
Something went wrong during Java installation.
----------------------------------------------
Now Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

Remove any Java mentioned programs you will find there.
If it's only this one >> jre1.6.0_07 please remove it.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following Folder:

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07

Right-Click and remove it.
Empty Recycle-Bin.
----------------------------------------------
Now i want you to re-download Java.

I will post another set of Java download instructions here, so you don't have to go back to previous page.

You better print or copy the instructions below in Notepad, and have only Java site open to install it.
----------------------------------------------
JAVA INSTALLATION

----------------------------------------------
Let me know if any problems, if you still get that error message, and post a new HijackThis log.

I went to Add remove programs. The only Java file was Java(TM)6 Update 7. I clicked to remove and got the same error message that I got before when I tried to re-download it.

"Internal Error 2753 RegUtils"

Except that this time I got a second message, "Fatal error during installation"

I clicked on change and reinstalled Java and then clicked on remove. Same thing happened, with both messages.

So I went to look in Windows Explorer. I found the same thing as before. An application called ssvagent is there, no ssv.dll anywhere, and a regutils.dll is there.

Then I sorted by date modified. All the .dll files were dated 6/10/08 4:27AM except two at the bottom, which were dated 6/10/08:44 A.M.:

msvcr71.dll
regutils.dll

I did not try to delete any of the files. I know I might only get part deleted and make your job harder. So I am waiting for further instructions.

Here is the latest Hijack This log:

Re: Need help to clean up after effects of a trojan

I may have found something. When I first got this computer last November I was being ultra-careful and I had "Forbid Java" checked in NoScript. When I went back to the 12/18/07 backup, I forgot to look at those options and uncheck it.

So when I downloaded Java 6 Update 7 I was downloading it from Firefox with Java forbidden.

That may explain why, but not how to fix it. Yvette

Download and run this tool to remove Java:
Microsoft's Installer Cleanup Utility

Let me know if it worked.

It worked. After I did ran the cleanup it was still in the program files, but I deleted it and emptied the recycle bin. But it didn't remove the "file missing" lines from Hijack This.
