adware shutting off computer

Unread postby tauld » July 20th, 2008, 12:07 pm

I recently got an update on my computer telling me that adware is probably affecting my computer. After the computer began to perform slower, i tried a scan to get rid of the problem but a blue screen popped up and my computer restarted. Every time I try a scan my computer automatically shuts down after the blue screen appears. Definitely not an expert with computers. Help would be greatly appreciated

Hi tauld,

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Re: adware shutting off computer

Unread postby silver » July 24th, 2008, 9:32 pm

Hi tauld,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7) from here

Viewpoint Media Player is not malware but is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
attrib -r -s -h "C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del /q /a /f "C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll" >> results.txt 2>>&1
attrib -r -s -h "C:\WINDOWS\system32\blphcglcj0epe7.scr" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del /q /a /f "C:\WINDOWS\system32\blphcglcj0epe7.scr" >> results.txt 2>>&1
attrib -r -s -h "C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphcglcj0epe7.exe" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del /q /a /f "C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphcglcj0epe7.exe" >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg delete "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{e931912b-b20a-40fb-9611-5b805d7bf82d}" /f >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg delete "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html" /f >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system" /v NoDispBackgroundPage /f >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system" /v NoDispScrSavPage /f >> results.txt 2>>&1
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results.txt output, the Eset scan report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, let me know how your computer is running now.

Re: adware shutting off computer

Unread postby silver » July 28th, 2008, 9:37 pm

i had to do a system restore back to an earlier date so here is the new hjt log
The problem with this is that I have no idea what the state of the system was at the time this Restore Point is made, so we basically have to start again. I can't help you if you make major system changes instead of following the instructions I post.

my computer has seemed to have picked up trojans and other spyware since last post!
What makes you think this?

How is your computer running since you performed the System Restore?

Please make new reports with DSS, if you need to download the program again you can do so from here: (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectool ... rd/dss.exe
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
  • A configuration box will appear, make sure all boxes are checked press Scan!
