McAfee Found Trojan & removed. Is my machine clean?

Unread postby dtheall » July 17th, 2008, 1:08 pm

I had copied a file from my own website to my harddrive to make a minor change. Immediately, McAfee found a Trojan. Attached Vista snips show alerts received from McAfee. First alert when I copied the file. Second one (dated 7/17) when I booted up this morning. I contacted my web designer and they had found the same Trojan and removed it. They've locked down the website. I want to know if there are any traces of any infections left on my machine or any other malware that has gone undetected. I regularly run McAfee, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, Windows Defender, Adaware. Thank you!

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

I am currently looking at your log now and will be back as soon as possible with your instructions.
while you are waiting one other thing that can be of good use is an uninstall list so please do the following

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Right click on HijackThis and click Run as administrator
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

Hello Donna,

Uninstall Ask Toolbar
I recommend that you uninstall Ask Toolbar due to that companies use of disceptive and otherwise questionable practices.
Please read this article, Current Practices of IAC/Ask Toolbars.
If you decide to uninstall Ask Toolbar, you can do so as follows:
  1. Go to start > control panel > programs and features.
  2. Highlight Ask Toolbar
  3. Click Uninstall & then follow the prompts to remove it.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  1. Right click on mbam-setup.exe and select Run as administrator
  2. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  3. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  4. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  5. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  6. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  7. Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
  8. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Right click on dss.exe and select Run as administrator, then follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

Please post the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log along with the contents of main.txt and extra.txt.

Hi Carolyn. I removed ASK Toolbar. Don't need it anyway. I am getting a BLUETOOTH POP up window screen shot attached - after installing MALWAREBYTES. How do I fix this? Also, once I scan and click remove selected, what are the files it is removing? I will run scan now. thanks

Malwarebytes' Anti-malware will remove infected files, if any are found.

Please post the screenshot in the body of your reply. I am not able to open the attachment.

Thank you.

Malware scan result: No malicious items were detected, log below. It ran for almost two hours. I have not run the other scan yet.
Here is the popup I got for Bluetooth. I can't get it to copy/paste but it says: Please execute 'setup.exe' for install or upgrade. The window is from Bluetooth software.

Re: McAfee Found Trojan & removed. Is my machine clean?

Unread postby dtheall » July 22nd, 2008, 11:47 am

Additional info. I clicked on "settings" in Malwarebytes and it popped up the Bluetooth message again. Seems to be something with that software and my bluetooth, which is working ok. I have a question on the DSS scan - it has a disclaimer that it may cause damage! I'm a little concerned about that so I have not run it yet. What are the risks of running that type of scan?

The Bluetooth popup came up when I installed Malwarebytes. Other than that and the McAfee Trojan alert, my machine has been running normally.

Let's not worry about that Bluetooth popup for now. In the meanwhile, I will check on problems that Malwarebytes and Bluetooth might have.

As for DSS, it won't do any damage to your computer. It is one of the most commonly used tools. Now a-days, everything comes with a legal disclaimer. The author is simply being prudent by including it. It's standard practice to do so.

I understand your concern. One of the more important concepts that we practice here is to "do no harm" in the course of helping our Users. We take our work here VERY seriously.

Re: McAfee Found Trojan & removed. Is my machine clean?

Unread postby Carolyn » July 22nd, 2008, 1:10 pm

Hello,

It will take me a little while to look over your logs.

I see that Windows Firewall is disabled. With the Firewall disabled, your computer is vulnerable and could be compromised.

To turn on Windows Firewall
  1. Open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start, clicking Control Panel, clicking Security, and then clicking Windows Firewall.
  2. Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. Administrator permission required - If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  3. Click On (recommended), and then click OK.
  4. If you want the firewall to block everything, including the programs selected on the Exceptions tab, select the Block all incoming connections check box.

I am at work right now, but will review your logs and post again as soon as possible.

Carolyn, I am running McAfee Security Center with FW. I did not think it wise to run two firewalls, as I have read that there are conflicts when running multiple FW software. My Linksys wireless router also has a FW.

Yes, you are correct. You do not want to have more than one software FW running.

The DSS log does not show McAfee at all. I should have also noticed that the AV is not listed here as well.

DSS extra.txt wrote:Windows Internal Firewall is disabled.

AS: Spybot - Search and Destroy v1.0.0.5 (Safer Networking Ltd.) Disabled
AS: Windows Defender v1.1.1505.0 (Microsoft Corporation)
AS: SUPERAntiSpyware v4, 15, 0, 1000 (SUPERAntiSpyware.com) Disabled

Please check the status of McAfee Security Center. Make sure the FW and AV are enabled. They should be listed in the DSS results, but It could be a glitch in DSS. Let me know what you find out.

AS: Spybot - Search and Destroy v1.0.0.5 (Safer Networking Ltd.) Disabled - I have spybot icon. It runs on schedule every morning
AS: Windows Defender v1.1.1505.0 (Microsoft Corporation) - this is running
AS: SUPERAntiSpyware v4, 15, 0, 1000 (SUPERAntiSpyware.com) Disabled - I update and run this. It isn't disabled.

I cannot paste my McAfee panel into this window. Everything is enabled.
