Web Technologies malware

Unread postby st00rmy2006 » July 9th, 2008, 1:12 pm

I acquired a very pesky popup "System Alert: Trojan-Spy.Win32@mx"and a "Critical System Warning" inviting me to download antispyware software.

I think I traced the offenders to a program file "Web Technologies", but I cannot delete the executables including wcs.exe and iebtm.exe.

Please help. Logfile follows

Hello,

Welcome to Malware Removal.

Step 1

If you already have Smitfraudfix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please download SmitFraudFix.exe by S!Ri and save it to the desktop.

If you can't download it, please download it from these alternative sites:

From Geekstogo
From Security Cadets
From Zebulon

  1. Double click on SmitfraudFix.exe.
  2. Press 1 then hit the Enter key.
  3. It will create a report named rapport.txt, usually at C drive.
  4. Please post back this log in your next reply.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Read more here

Step 2

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. Smitfraudfix report (C:\rapport.txt)
  2. A new HijackThis log
  3. The Uninstall list

Here are the requested files. Note: I think that I got rid of the pests by "brute force" since my first post, but let's continue the process anyway "just in case"... Thanks!

Hello,

Step 1

Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs.

If you find any of the following programs listed, click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.

IEBrowse Tool
IExplorer Bar

Step 2

Please copy this set of instructions or print it out as you will not have internet access during the fix.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode

:!: Let me know if you can't boot into Safe Mode. Do not continue with the fixes.

  1. When you see the BIOS screen, start pressing F8.
  2. A boot menu will appear shortly.
  3. Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
  4. Windows will now load.
  5. Log in to your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe.

Press 2 and press Enter to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?; press Y and press Enter in order to start cleaning the cleaning process. Your desktop will be gone for a while cleaning.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You will be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); press Y and press Enter.

The tool will restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart manually into Normal Mode.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy and paste the contents of that report into your next reply. The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note to users: Running option 2 on a clean machine will remove your desktop background.

Step 3

  1. Please download Deckard's System Scanner from Tech Support Forum and save it to your desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  2. Save all your work and close all opened programs.
  3. Double click on dss.exe to run it. Follow the prompts.
  4. When the scan is complete, two log files will be produced. The first one, main.txt, will be maximized, the second one, extra.txt, will be minimized.
  5. Please post the contents of the 2 log files in your next reply. 1 log per reply please.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. The 2 DSS reports
  2. Smitfraudfix report (C:\rapport.txt)

Hello,

Disable Windows Defender temporarily

Please disable Windows Defender temporarily as it may interfere with the fixes.

  1. Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Defender.
  2. Click on Tools at the top.
  3. Under Settings, click on Options.
  4. Under Automatic scanning, uncheck (untick) Automatically scan my computer (recommended) box.
  5. Under Real-time protection options, uncheck (untick) Use real-time protection (recommended) box.
  6. Click on the Save button at the bottom right hand corner.

Next...

Double click on the fix.reg created earlier to merge it with the registry.

Please run Deckard's System Scanner again after the file has been merged with the registry.

Thanks.

Done. You did not say to send the log but I'll paste it below just in case.
Also, I have both Windows Defender and McAfee VirsusScan Enterprise installed. Should I re-enable Windows Defender. What settings do you recommend for etither/both? (Should I disable one of them?) Thanks!
