Potential malware issue causing Outlook to send emails

Unread postby gdmiller5 » July 2nd, 2008, 9:28 pm

For the past few months, every Monday morning when I turn on my PC, Outlook sends emails to .RU email addresses. I know it does because I receive undeliverable notices back from them. Sometimes just a couple, sometimes, 20. I have formatted my hard drive, run countless malware/spyware solutions, and it still is resident. Outside of getting the hard drive back down to 1's and 0's by basically killing the drive, I dont know what else to do. I am hoping the answer is below. Thanks in advance for the help. Gary

Re: Potential malware issue causing Outlook to send emails

Unread postby silver » July 5th, 2008, 10:32 pm

Hi gdmiller5,

There is no malware in your log, that doesn't guarantee your machine is clean but it's a good sign. There is however a 'rogue' antispyware product - Phishing Sweeper. Typically, rogue programs do not provide any security benefits, and use false positives to goad users into purchasing a full version of the program. I strongly suggest you remove it - to do so, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for Phishing Sweeper and remove it.

I also recommend you remove Logitech Desktop Messenger. This is a background process which can access the internet without your knowledge or consent. Although it can assist in providing software updates for your Logitech hardware, it uses resources on your machine and the fact that it accesses the internet without your approval is potentially dangerous. Logitech Desktop Messenger can be removed via Add/Remove Programs.

Regarding the problem you report, you may be the victim of spam backscatter, please read these links to learn more about this problem:
http://secondwheel.googlepages.com/backscatter
http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.p ... ;16;fpid;1

We can have a look at your machine to check for malware if you wish, but if the problem is backscatter then it won't be due to anything on your computer. Please let me know how you would like to proceed.

Unread postby gdmiller5 » July 7th, 2008, 10:43 pm

Thank you so much for the response. It definitely seems like I am a victim of backscatter. I will continue to pursue this to see what I find. But I am happy to say that today, no undeliverable messages. Perhaps it ran its course.

One other thing. I deleted that phishing software but now I get a message at windows startup that says it cant find a DLL file for that software and that I shoudl reinstall to make the situation good again. How can I get rid of this annoying message??

Thanks.

Hi Gary,

Backscatter is very annoying but unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it :(

If you post a new HijackThis log I should be able to advise you on completing the removal of the phishing program.

Hi gdmiller5,

Open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Trial Phishing Sweeper] C:\Program Files\PhshSwpr\PhshSwpr.exe -min
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Now reboot your computer, then use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folder:
C:\Program Files\PhshSwpr
If you have trouble finding or deleting it, please let me know in your next response.

Once complete, reboot and see if the problem recurs. Then please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how you got on.

Hi gdmiller5,

I'm glad to hear things are better and you're most welcome :) here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
