Hi infected_Vundo,

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi infected_Vundo,

It doesn't look like there is an active Vundo infection on your machine, but there is a little tidying up to do.

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
This is out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6) from here

PokerStars has been reported as being malware-related so I strongly recommend you remove it.
To do so, uninstall PokerStars via Add/Remove Programs

You have BitTornado, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I strongly recommend you remove BitTornado via Add/Remove Programs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F38E7117-4AB9-4C22-8C7F-34C45E9BBBDE} - (no file)
O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

If you removed PokerStars then you should also check this line:
O9 - Extra button: PokerStars - {3AD14F0C-ED16-4e43-B6D8-661B03F6A1EF} - C:\Program Files\PokerStars\PokerStarsUpdate.exe
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vfvpopyq.dll
If you have trouble finding or deleting any, please let me know in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit- ... channel=32

Fill in the link to topic field with a link to this topic
Copy/paste the following into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:
C:\WINDOWS\erwg.exe
Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir "C:\WINDOWS\compro" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt" 2>>&1
A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look.txt.
Please wait until the black box closes before opening look.txt
Post the contents of look.txt in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the look.txt output, the Eset report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi infected_Vundo

Yes we'll remove the Oracle entries and the redundant McAfee ones as well. It looks like you followed the upload instructions correctly but it still didn't work for some reason. We'll try it again but using a different method.

Backup Your Registry:
  • Download ERUNT to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Right-click erunt.zip, choose Extract All... and follow the prompts to unzip the program
  • Open the erunt folder on your Desktop and double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fix file associations with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes that appear and press Fix
  • Then close Deckard's System Scanner

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
sc stop McShield >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete McShield >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc stop McSysmon >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete McSysmon >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc stop OracleDBConsolePROD >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete OracleDBConsolePROD >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc stop OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListener >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListener >> results.txt 2>>&1
copy C:\WINDOWS\erwg.exe "%userprofile%\desktop\erwg.vir" >> results.txt 2>>&1
dir C:\WINDOWS\erwg.exe >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders /v SecurityProviders /d "msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll" /f >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders /v SecurityProviders >> results.txt 2>>&1
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

Hopefully, a file called erwg.vir should also appear on your Desktop, please upload this as previously using this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit- ... channel=32
This time, use the Browse button to locate and select the erwg.vir file on your Desktop, then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results.txt output and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your machine is running now.

Hey,
the deckard step(forgot details) fixed two file associations/extension things.
All other steps fine,
uploaded erwig.vir to bleeping compuuter.com

Computer has always been running fine. Avast recognised a vundo infection and could properly delete it, so I turned to you guys who have been great!

Hi infected_Vundo,

The file you uploaded is certainly bad, so please delete erwg.vir from your Desktop and then delete the original file:
C:\WINDOWS\erwg.exe

One of the McAfee services is being a bit stubborn, please try this:

Download RegASSASSIN to your Desktop
Double-click the program to open it, click I Agree, then copy/paste the following key into the white box:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\McShield
Then press the Delete button and click Yes/OK to the prompts.

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know if you had any difficulty with the instructions.

Hi infected_Vundo,

Looks good :) some important final steps:

Please now delete dss.exe and RegASSASSIN.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:
C:\Deckard

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Re-enable Spybot's TeaTimer
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Check the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the above went well, I think your machine is now clean of malware :) here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program. If you choose to use this program you should disable Spybot's Tea Timer as they monitor many of the same things.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.

Read it done it, cheers.

When I re enabled Spybot Resident it popped up with two changes..
the first was Java going from 6.05 to 6.06 - I allowed it.

The next was some registry key changed from %1 to %1 or something like that.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it automatically denied two other things (as I saw four popups in the bottom right hand corner).
Is this normal/ should I do anything about it??

Cheers

Yes, sometimes Spybot tries to 'catch up' with all the changes made.
All the changes I know about since Tea Timer was disabled are ones we want to allow, so if there were some changes denied, or you aren't sure, we can check the log:

Open Spybot S&D
Use the top menu to select Mode->Advanced Mode
Then use the left menu to select Tools->Resident
Click Hide this information to get more room, and highlight all todays entries in the log section.
Press CTRL-C to copy these, and paste the information in your next response along with another HijackThis log.

Hi infected_Vundo,

It looks like Tea Timer has blocked some changes, one of which is a change we made and another is for a hard drive check. These changes were blocked automatically because a previous change was manually blocked and "Remember this decision" was checked. To resolve this I recommend you uninstall Spybot via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, re-do the changes and then reinstall the program. This will reset your user blacklist.

After you have uninstalled Spybot, please do as follows:

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F38E7117-4AB9-4C22-8C7F-34C45E9BBBDE} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0005-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_05) -
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

One of the changes blocked was a disk check which you should reschedule as follows:
Please open My Computer, right-click on Local Disk (C: ) and select Properties
Choose the Tools tab and under Error checking click Check Now...
Click the box marked Automatically fix file system errors and press Start
If you are asked to schedule the disk check for the next boot, say Yes

Repeat this for all your hard drive partitions, then reboot to complete any disks to be checked on boot.

Then, download and install the latest version of Spybot from here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know if you had any difficulties.
