Adaware.purityscan and other problems

Unread postby joelvelasco » June 29th, 2008, 6:22 pm

Hi, I am using Windows XP and have been infected by at least one (probably more) viruses or malware items. When I run symantec antivirus it sometimes detects a few viruses (that seem to differ every time) but usually including adaware.purityscan. The program says it cleans it and requires a reboot. When I do this, it usually boots up and immediately symantec pops up that there is a problem with a netdde.exe file (usually with a few question marks in various places in the address). Pretty soon symantec will auto-detect various viruses and eventually it will be the purityscan thing again and ask me to reboot. So I have been running full scans and rebooting the computer many many times in the last two days and no progress seems to be made (but different problems seem to occur each time).

Thank you so much for any help you can give me. Here is the Hijackthis log:

Hi joelvelasco

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Hi

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Code: Select all
File::
C:\WINDOWS\BMfb0ec945.xml
C:\Documents and Settings\Joel Velasco\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Spruce - Auto Update.lnk

DirLook::
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\{F9AC68EC-7828-47BE-96E8-705EE2D1CF7D}

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\modtrux01
C:\Temp\syschk3
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vntiho01

Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Hategpuc"=-

Save this as "CFScript"

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Image

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

During the combofix run an updater for adobe flash player popped up but nothing else did (I did not click on anything - and my internet connection was disabled at the time). Here is the combofix log followed by the hijack log.

Thanks

Hi

Please make sure that all programs are closed when installing Java.

  1. Click here to visit Java's website.
  2. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. Click on Download.
  3. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  4. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  5. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  6. Click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  7. Double click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.
  8. After the Java installation has finished, please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  9. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  10. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  11. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  12. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
      Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  13. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  14. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  15. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  16. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  17. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Very soon after I posted my last message, a Symantec AntiVirus notification popped up which says that an auto scan found a threat - the threat is Adware.Purityscan (spelled correctly here - sorry if it was always "Adware" instead of "Adaware") The file listed is "C:\System Volume Information\_restore{CCA15F78-7193-4CA6-8115-2B570DD6546C}\RP2\A0000013.exe" and the location is listed as "C:\System Volume Information\_restore{CCA15F78-7193-4CA6-8115-2B570DD6546C}\RP2"
Then soon the Auto-Protect Results popped up with the risk listed as Adware.Purityscan and action recommended is Roboot Required - Quarantine with the Filename as A0000013.exe

I have not done anything about this and I will go to the Java website anyway and follow your instructions

I tried to run the Java program and Java Web Start 1.4.2_03 did pop up and it says starting application but then another window popped up with says Security Warning "Warning:Failed to verify the authenticity of this certificate because there was an error parsing the certificate. No assertions can be made of the origin or validity of the code. Installing and running this code is not allowed. Then I have to click on an Exit box.

Hi

Symantec notice is fine, there are viruses in system restore for sure.

You can try to re-download java, if still no go, we use another way.

Just re-clicked on java file (1215096538107-integrated Properties) listed as a JNLP File and saved on my desktop. But the security warning about the authenticity immediately popped up again so nothing happened.

Hi

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Internet connection appears to be working fine but I can't seem to connect to update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. The installation file was downloaded and setup was run. When I run the program it looks for an update. First, it said looking for "It-Mate.col.uk" After a few minutes I gave up and reopened the program. Under the Update tab I have tried update mirror Malwarebytes.org and MalwareSupport.com and in all three cases, the update window pops up and it looks for something without ever progressing. Should I go ahead and run the full scan without an update? Or is there something I can try to get an update?

Hi

Try this link before that. If download is successful, execute that file when mbam is closed.
