Hi
I see you have P2P software ( iMesh MediaBar ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares and their infections.

References for the risk of these programs are here,
here and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

Please do the following.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Windows Defender normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

- Open Windows Defender
- Select Tools and then General Settings
- Under Real Time Protection Options uncheck Turn on real-time protection
- Select Save
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Now please do this.
Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (Windows Vista it’s Programs and Features) and remove the following (if present):

MyWebSearch and/or MyWebSearch Plugin

Now Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Plugin] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\3.bin\M3PLUGIN.DLL,UPF

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close HJT.

Reboot into safe mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBSEARCH

After that, Reboot.

Please post a New HJT Log into this Thread.

Let me know if you still get the error message.

Thanks

hi...

thanks for the advice. actually the day i posted my first log, i tried to search in the net for possible reasons of this error while still waiting for your reply. And got some ideas with the solutions.

being so bothered with the dll error pop-up, i tried to fix it myself thru hijackthis program. I found the O4 - HKCU\.. \Run.... m3plugin.dll ... and tried to check and fix checked it. When i rebooted my computer, the pop-up did not appear anymore. And in addition, i can't find anymore traces of mywebsearch plugin in the PROGRAMS&FEATURES in my control panel and in my C:\programfiles...

Im so sorry for being in a hurry and did not wait for your reply but im just so desperate and irritated with the error pop-up.

However, i just wanted to know now if i still did the right thing and consider my computer as already CLEAN.. please let me know if there's still something to be done to completely clean my computer from spyware and adware. Im planning to remove iMesh application now.

Below is my hijackthis log after i fix checked the O4...m3plugin.dll...

Hi alchemist85
If you remove iMesh then I would like to see another HJT log to check for left overs that may not have been removed during the removal process.

Please also do this.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
This is a good tool to get rid of the temporary garbage you pick up while surfing the net.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache
Recycle bin

The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All".
Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

Now a on-line scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on “Accept” If your pop –up blocker blocks any windows from opening.

Click Run on the window that opens.
Windows Vista users you must open the web browser using the Run as Administrator command.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Under Scan on the left side.Click on My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • Click the “Scan Report” On the left side.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Click the Save Report As button, and in the Browse dialog box, type a name for the scan report file that you want to create and select its type Text file. Click OK to save the file.:
  • Save the text file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please post the Kaspersky results, and a new HJT log if you removed iMesh

Thanks

Hi...

Got some problem with the Kaspersky webscanner. I tried to have my computer scanned and waited for it to finish. When I tried to save the scan report to my desktop, nothing will appear! I dunno why. I tried for several times saving the report to my desktop and to other folders also, but still the same problem. I can't find the file. By the way, my computer is infected. Since, i can't save the report, I just copied its result. :)
Want to ask, can i manually delete these infected files?

Hi alchemist85

I will take over this thread and continue to help you.

Yes, you can delete manually all these:

C:\Program Files\Internet explorer\MSIMG32.dll
C:\Windows\Downloaded\Program Files\Popular Screensavers FWBinitialsetup1.0.1.0.exe
C:\Windows\System32\f3PSSavr.SCR

Empty Recycle Bin.

Any issues left?

Hi

Other files are related to mIRC.

It is a legit program but can be used also for illegal purposes.

This is not the case in your computer however.

I will give you tips a bit later unless you have some concerns left? :)

(Thanks Shaba)

Hi alchemist85
iMesh is still showing in your HJT log.

If you did in fact remove it then please do this.
Disable Spybots Tea Timer and Windows Defender as before.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://search.imesh.com/intl/
O3 - Toolbar: iMesh MediaBar - {B7D3E479-CC68-42B5-A338-938ECE35F419} - C:\Program Files\iMesh Applications\iMesh MediaBar\iMeshMediaBar.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close HJT.

Re-inable Tea Timer and Windows Defender.

Looking over your log again I don't see a Anti-Virus program running on your system.
This is a must have.

One of your first defenses against infections is an Anti-virus program.
This is a Must Have to help keep you protected in today’s Internet world.
Here are some good ones and the best part, they are Free!

Please Download and run only 1 AV

Anti-Virus
AVGFree
Avast

Download, Update and scan your computer with the AV. Quarantine/Delete anything it finds.
Check for updates [b]at least
once a week and do regular scans. Most AV’s can be scheduled to scan at a given time, this is also recommended.

Here are a few Preventive recommendations:

The following is a list of tools and utilities that we recommend to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

  1. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft.
To do this just Click > Start > All Programs Click on > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
(It is recommended that you have Windows Updates set to download and install automatically.)

  2. Ad-Aware - Another well known and reputable, FREE (for personal use) adware, spyware and malware removal program, Ad-Aware and Spybot S & D compliment each other very well, each finding and/or removing things the other doesn't. Regular scans with these two applications will help to ensure that many nasties managing to sneak in get caught and removed. The first in anti-spyware packages, Ad-Aware has the experience to provide a powerful cleaning tool. Also available in a feature-rich Professional version, making Ad-Aware an attractive package for everyone from Home user to Enterprise.

Remember to ALWAYS check for and install available updates prior to scanning!

  3. SpywareBlaster is a Freeware (for personal use) application that will help to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software. It accomplishes this by blocking the installation of many known bad ActiveX controls, spyware and tracking cookies, and restricting the actions of potentially unwanted sites. SpywareBlaster does not require any running or background processes to work once protections are enabled, which means it will not slow down your system in any way.

  4. SpywareGuard - A Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer, acting much like your antivirus real-time protection. It's features include scanning files for spyware before you open them, blocking spyware downloads in Internet Explorer and monitoring/preventing attempted browser hijacking. Small and lightweight, yet powerful! Compatible with Windows 98, ME, 2000 & XP
    FREEWARE (for personal use)

  5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 23,000 known bad sites in your Internet Explorer restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. Restricted means they can't run ActiveX controls, drop unwanted cookies, etc.

  6. The MVPS Hosts File or similar HOSTS file will actually block a list of known bad sites from even loading in your browser. It can also be used to block ads, banners, 3rd party cookies and more. Operating system compatibility and installation instructions are provided.

  7. Install WinPatrol to monitor some key registry locations, file system changes, and other important areas, and have it alert you of the changes BEFORE allowing them to take place.

  8. Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites. When using a search engine, The Ratings show up as small dots next to the web site. Green for Good, Yellow for Caution, Red for bad. Put your cruiser on the dot for a small pop up window for more information on that web site.
Web Browser: Internet Explorer 6 or 7. : Also works with Firefox.
Operating System: Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4) Windows XP and Windows Vista

Now just because you have security applications installed, they are useless unless updated regularly.
Most of the above recommended applications are updated periodically, and it's up to you to check for updates. Set aside time in a day each month to update all of your protections.

Unread postby alchemist85 » June 17th, 2008, 7:36 am

hi maranatha...

thanks for those helpful tips.. :)

by the way, regarding teacher saba's reply yesterday about the infections detected by kaspersky, i can't find the file, C:\Windows\Downloaded\Program Files\Popular Screensavers FWBinitialsetup1.0.1.0.exe

I installed all the programs you recommend earlier except only for the spywareguard since im not so sure if that's compatible for my windows vista. It stated compatibility for windows 98, ME, 2000, & xp. Could there be compatibility issues here?

by the way, here's my HJT lof after i fix checked the iMesh traces.. hope I'm totally cleaned! hehe :)

Hi alchemist85

OK still have some iMesh showing.

Please do this.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (Windows Vista it’s Programs and Features) and remove any of the following (if present):

iMesh Applications
iMesh MediaBar
MediaBar

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list and post them in your next response

Disable Spybots Tea Timer and Windows Defender as before.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: UrlHelper Class - {474597C5-AB09-49d6-A4D5-2E8D7341384E} - C:\Program Files\iMesh Applications\iMesh MediaBar\iMeshIEHelper.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close HJT.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

C:\Program Files\iMesh Applications

Empty your recycle bin or run ATF Cleaner again.

Reboot your computer.

Please post a New HJT Log into this Thread.

Thanks
