Help! Malware attack! - HijackThis log

Unread postby ramaan1 » May 31st, 2008, 12:33 pm

Help needed as my computer is under attack! I get random advert winows popping up on IE7 and Firefox and also RunDLL Buffer overrun error. I did a system scan on HousCall and it displayed a few malware but not able to remove any. VundoFix did not help. I have copied the HJT log. Any help will be massively appreciated.

Hello ramaan1,

I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are using Windows Vista you must right click on the desktop icon and choose Run as Administrator all tools.
----------------------------------------------
Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
----------------------------------------------
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.
----------------------------------------------
RENAME HIJACKTHIS

There is some infection hiding in your log.

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to: C:\Documents and Settings\Sriram\My Documents\My Completed Downloads\HiJackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to scanner.exe and post back a new Hijackthis log.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
SDFix report.
A new HijackThis log.

Hello ramaan1,

I am still gettin pop-ups but it seems to be less frequent now.

There is more infection on your pc that's why you still have the pop-ups. :(

We'll use another tool now. :)
----------------------------------------------
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Additional links to download the tool:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Hi Chryssi2001, thanks a ton for the reply. I have run ComboFix and it seems much better now. Thanks a lot for all your help! I am pasting the logs here. Any further help to get rid of the malware for good would be a massive help!

Re: Help! Malware attack! - HijackThis log

Unread postby chryssi2001 » June 2nd, 2008, 4:26 pm

Hello ramaan1,

Obviously this is the reason you are so much infected. P2P Programs.

P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Warez P2P Client
BearShare
Azureus

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Also available here.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

If you choose not to remove them, please do not use them until this computer is clean.

FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

Close HijackThis.

COMBOFIX-Script
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    Folder::
    C:\Program Files\Save
    c:\program files\zango
    C:\Program Files\DAP

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WhenUSave]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\zango]
    [HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
    "C:\\Program Files\\DAP\\DAP.exe"=-

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Hello ramaan1,

Hi Chryssi2001, yes you are right about the p2p programs. Ive learnt my lesson now and I have gotten rid of them! I am posting all the logs back here. Let me know how ive got on so far. Once again, I cant thank you enough for all your help.

You did fine. It looks a lot better.
You are welcome :)

Since you removed all P2P programs (Good decision :) ) we still have some work to do, to remove all P2P remainants.
----------------------------------------------
COMBOFIX-Script
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    Folder::
    C:\VundoFix Backups
    C:\Program Files\Azureus
    C:\Program Files\Warez P2P Client

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\warez]

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Using Internet Explorer Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html and click the Accept button at the end of the page.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
Combofix report.
Kaspersky report.
A new HijackThis log.
How is the pc running please?

Hi Chryssi2001, apologies for the delay in posting back the logs. The PC appears to be back to normal now with no more pop-ups or runtime errors. Here are the logs. Cheers!

Hello ramaan1,

Even if i tried to remove Warez P2P Client it still shows there.

C:\Program Files\Warez P2P Client

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

    Warez P2P Client
    BearShare

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following Folders: if found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Program Files\Warez P2P Client
C:\Program Files\BearShare << Infected.

Let me know if you had any difficulties doing this, and if you found them.
----------------------------------------------
Now using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following Folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Sriram\.housecall6.6\Quarantine

Right-Click and empty Quarantine Folder.
----------------------------------------------

Download RegSearch by Bobbi Flekman.
  • Create a folder in your C: drive C:\Regsearch, and extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.
  • Double click regsearch.exe to launch the programme.
  • Copy/Paste the following into the Search Box Warez P2P Client
  • Click OK.
Regsearch will now search your Registry for the required strings, when it is finished it will open a Notepad file RegSearch.txt, saved to the Regsearch folder.

Copy/Paste that file into your next post.
----------------------------------------------
Let me know if the programs were removed.
Post back the results from RegSearch.
