My Computer Seems to Have a Mind of I'ts Own

Unread postby social misfit » May 12th, 2008, 12:44 am

To Whom It May Concern: 5/11\08

I originally asked for help and received instructions about a month

ago but was unable to execute your plan due to personal circumsrances.

I still need help desperatly. My computer creates new files, hidden

files, denies me access, and when I try to gain access through

security settings it will force a shut down then on reboot deny me

logon. I've lost count of how many times I have reinstalled XP. I

hate the fact that some *%@#*!*^%# invaded and controles my computer.
A friend suggested I get a new hard drive. Even if that did work I

would consider it a hollow victory. I want defeat the *@%#*%. MAU

helped me rid my moms computer of a ZLOB Trojan Downloader last year.

I included a HijackThis and Smit Fraud file. I will not make a move

until I hear back from you. Thanx

Unread postby Carolyn » May 19th, 2008, 3:56 pm

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please reply to this thread, do not start another.
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

As I am still in training, everything that I post to you must be checked by one of the teachers. Thus, there may be a bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

There is a newer version of HijackThis available.

Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

Important: Before posting a new log:

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad
2. On the menu bar in Notepad select Format and click on WordWrap so it appears un-checked.

Please post the new HijackThis log and the stall list in your next reply.

Hello,

Please re-enable all of the items you had disabled using Autoruns.
I see that you have used Sysinternal's Autoruns to disable a number of items on your computer - the details of those items are replaced by "AutorunsDisabled" in the HijackThis log. I need to see the details for those items in your logs. If necessary, we can disable them again later.

Download CCleaner from here.

Run CCleaner
CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!
  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    • In the Windows Tab:
      • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
      • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
      • Clean all entries in the System section
      • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
      • Clean any others that you choose
    • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
      • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO
CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Using Internet Explorer Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html and click the Accept button at the end of the page.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with main.txt and extra.txt.

P2P Warning!

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

I would recommend that you uninstall LimeWire, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

Your computer has less than the recommended amount of Memory (RAM) for running Windows XP You should consider adding additional Memory to the system.

Total Physical Memory: 248 MiB (512 MiB recommended).

Disable MS Defender until the computer is clean

Microsoft Defender normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

- Open Windows Defender
- Select Tools and then General Settings
- Under Real Time Protection Options uncheck Turn on real-time protection
- Select Save
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Let's begin cleaning your computer...

Step1:
Please re-enable all of the items you had disabled using Autoruns.
I see that you have used Sysinternal's Autoruns to disable a number of items on your computer - the details of those items are replaced by "AutorunsDisabled" in the HijackThis log. I need to see the details for those items in your logs. If necessary, we can disable them again later.

Step 2:
Open Notepad, paste the following code box contents into the text.
Code: Select all
sc stop "ETJ"
sc delete "ETJ"
sc stop "GFQMBW"
sc delete "GFQMBW"
sc stop "WRPU"
sc delete "WRPU"

Use Notepad's File, Save As to save it to your desktop as File type All Files (not as text file or it won't work), and file name FixSvc.bat
Exit Notepad and double click on FixSvc.bat
A Command window will flash on and off.

REBOOT your machine. Sign in to your usual account.

Step 3:

Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O23 - Service: ETJ - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\phuqtoo\LOCALS~1\Temp\ETJ.exe (file missing)

    O23 - Service: GFQMBW - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\phuqtoo\LOCALS~1\Temp\GFQMBW.exe (file missing)

    O23 - Service: WRPU - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\phuqtoo\LOCALS~1\Temp\WRPU.exe (file missing)

O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - (no file)

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 4:

Please download OTMoveIt2.exe by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.

Double click on OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.

Copy and paste the following in the Code box into OTMoveIt (1).

Note: Do not type it out to minimize the risk of typo error.

Code: Select all
C:\DOCUME~1\phuqtoo\LOCALS~1\Temp\ETJ.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\phuqtoo\LOCALS~1\Temp\GFQMBW.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\phuqtoo\LOCALS~1\Temp\WRPU.exe

Click on MoveIt! (2).

When done, click on Exit (3).

Note: If a file or folder can't be moved immediately, you may asked to restart your computer. Please choose Yes.

Please refer to this picture for using OTMoveIt.

The log will be produced at C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\date_time.log, where date_time are numbers. Please post this log in your next reply.

  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours

Step 6:

  1. Click here to perform a Panda online scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it requires ActiveX.
  2. Click on Scan your PC now.
  3. A new window will open.
  4. Select your country and type in your email address. You may also optionally choose to receive emails from Panda. If you don't wish to, please select I do not want to receive marketing information from Panda Software and/or its International Representatives where applicable. option.
  5. Click on Free online scan.
  6. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX. Please allow it.
  7. Once installed, it will start downloading the virus definitions. Please be patient. This takes a while.
  8. Once the files are downloaded, it will ask you to select what to scan. Select My Computer.
  9. The scan will start. It takes a while, please be patient.
  10. Once done, click on View Report.
  11. You will be brought to another page. Click on Save Report. Save it to your desktop. Please post this report in your next reply.

Step 7:
Please post the following in your next reply:

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
