Hi mrglupen,

You aren't running Anti Virus Software

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free for personal use anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Step 1:
Download HostsXpert v4.1 and unzip it to your computer, somewhere where you can find it.
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to launch the program.
  • Click on Restore MS Hosts File to restore your Hosts file to its default condition.
  • Click on Make ReadOnly to secure it against further infection.
  • Exit the program.
Visit the Website for more information.

Step 2:
  • Run HijackThis by right clicking and Run as Administrator
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present, some may have already been removed):
I have highlighted a line in red if you do not recognise it I suggest you fix it also.

  10. If Internet Explorer responds saying the report has been saved to the Temporary Internet Files folder, say Yes to open the folder, then navigate to C -> Users -> (Your username) -> Desktop to locate the report
  11. Copy and paste this log in your next reply.

Step 6:
Run HijackThis (by right clicking > Run as Administrator) do a system scan and in your next reply please post:
  • The online Kaspersky results
  • The new HijackThis log

Also please let me know how your computer is running and whether you found and deleted ezShellStart.exe OK.

Hi, thanks for your help so far. Much appreciated. The ads from brutalizer.com are gone now which I believe restoring the MsHost File achieved.

I have one more problem at the moment: Ever since I downloaded Avast!, drop-down boxes within applications stay frozen on the screen. For example, "right-click on desktop > New > Folder" - the drop-down tab with saying "Folder" stays frozen on the screen.

Here's the logs:

Ever since I downloaded Avast!, drop-down boxes within applications stay frozen on the screen.
It sounds like you may have too many active process in memory, Vista itself is fairly resource intensive and would require at least 1GB of RAM to run optimally, if you had less you may notice some performance issues. Avast has a resident (always on) scanner which scans files as they are about to start so it would be unwise to disable it. I will offer some fixes which may help free up some resources and you might find the following article useful, but please read it at the end of the fix as we have a little bit of work remaining:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miek ... puter.html

Step 1:
Please download ATF cleaner
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Deselect Cookies
    Click the Empty Selected button.
You can select cookies but you will have to re enter your login details to websites you frequent.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Deselect Firefox Cookies
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Deselect Opera Cookies
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step 2:
You have some infected emails that need to be deleted:

From "eBay Member: blooper906" <aw-confirm@eBay.com>][Date Sun, 16 Dec 2007 22:21:16 -0800 (PST)
From "eBay Member: rick-harley" <aw-confirm@eBay.com>][Date Wed, 26 Mar 2008 06:36:57 -0700 (PDT)
From "eBay Member: rick-harley" <aw-confirm@eBay.com>][Date Thu, 20 Mar 2008 15:27:33 -0700 (PDT)

Step 3:
  • Run HijackThis by right clicking and Run as Administrator
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present, some may have already been removed):
I have highlighted some lines in red these may help speed up your computer if you fix these also.

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvSvc] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\nvsvc.dll,nvsvcStart
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application and Restart your computer.

nvsvc.exe (NVIDIA Driver Helper Service) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. nvsvc.exe is a part of the graphic card drivers from NVIDIA. nvsvc.dll is a NVIDIA Driver Helper Service, This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvSvc] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\nvsvc.dll,nvsvcStart

NvCpl.dll,NvStartup initializes the clock and memory settings on nVidia based graphics cards. Enable if you overclock your card. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

You have NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit running at Startup. This is a System Tray icon used to manage settings for nVidia based graphics cards. May be required for some 3D applications to recognize your card correctly - such as the game "Everquest". Otherwise, settings can be changed manually via Display Properties. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit

You have realsched.exe (RealPlayer's autoupdate program) running at Startup. This is RealPlayer's autoupdate program and is not necessary for the program to function properly. realsched.exe is a program which schedules for manual update checks for Real Networks products. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference however disabling may prevent notification of updates. It is considered to be a resource hog. You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change the setting in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself.

Step 4:
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
    • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
    • Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE, J2SE, or Java Webstart in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all installed versions of Java.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE) and install it to your computer.

Your logs are now clean. :D :D
If you still feel you are having any issues please let me know now, otherwise read through and proceed with the following:

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints, you need to be registered to post as unfortunately we were hit with too many spam posting to allow guest posting to continue just find your country room and register your complaint.

Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection
You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented
  • Make sure you install all the security updates for Windows, Internet explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it to that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC
Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications
Note: The update process uses activex, so you will need to use internet explorer for it, and allow the activex control that it wants to install
  • Keep your non-Microsoft applications updated as well
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities, to check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month
  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    Click Start > Run
    Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Install SpywareBlaster & make sure to update it regularly
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster from here
  • Install and use Spybot Search & Destroy
    Instructions are located here
Make sure you update, reimmunize & scan regularly
  • Make use of the HOSTS file included with Spybot Search & Destroy
Every version of windows includes a hosts file as part of them. A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
Spybot Search & Destroy has a good HOSTS file built in, to enable the HOSTS file in Spybot Search & Destroy
    • Run Spybot Search & Destroy
    • Click on Mode, and then place a tick next to Advanced mode
    • Click Yes
    • In the left hand pane of Spybot Search & Destroy, click on Tools, and then on Hosts File
    • Click on Add Spybot-S&D hosts list
Note: On some PCs, having a custom HOSTS file installed can cause a significant slowdown. Following these instructions should resolve the issue
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type services.msc & click OK
    • In the list, find the service called DNS Client & double click on it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click OK & then close the Services window
For a more detailed explanation of the HOSTS file, click here
  • Install a-squared Free & update and scan with it regularly
a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. You can get it here
Note: If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers
  • Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is absolutely essential to keep all of your security programs up to date

Please reply to this topic one more time so I know you have read through it or with any questions you may have.
