Hi JDCQ

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.

  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

To start with Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file.

When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Please post back

Hi there MRU undergrad,

I haven't been able to get to my home computer much this week. I intend working on this problem over the weekend. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again for the advice.

Hi JDCQ

There has been some changes to your logs since you first posted a HJT log, your last HJT log shows
you now have a nasty Backdoor trogan, it has probably been downloaded between you posting logs.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Hi there and thanks for the quick reply. Are you certain there is a Backdoor Trojan in that list? I am not questioning your expertise but I've hardly used this computer since we first 'spoke' and I posted that first log to you.

I'd like to have a go at removing the said item as this computer has just recently been reformatted due to a power supply failure.

Also, I tried to defragment my computer last night after running the SDFix program and I got a message saying that I had to run CHKDSK or SCANDISK as there was a problem with my system files. I did that but still get the same message and can't defragment.

Can the SDFix program have caused this as it did delete a lot of stuff? Any ideas how I can defragment now?

I realise this latter question isn't exactly on topic but it is related as it only became an issue after running SDFix.

Thanks again for the quick response. I'm still waiting for a reply to an email I sent Trend Micro on the same day I contacted you guys!

Regards,

Jim

Hi JDCQ

Yes I am sure you have a backdoor,(Backdoor.IRC.Flood ), I can understand your frustration, especially if you have just reinstalled windows
but you do have a nasty infection,

The SDFix log shows that it only deleted Trojan Files, none of your system files were deleted,
The trouble you are having with CHKDSK "could" be were the infection has damaged, modified or deleted some of
your system files, if this is the case we will never know the extent of damage done, but there could be other
reasons why CHKDSK is not working, Do you have a Windows SP2 CD or did you reinstall from a recovery partition????.

Lets start cleaning

DownLoad CCleaner

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder,
back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner to clean temp files from your computer.
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds ... ading-slim

Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
Select your language and click OK, then next.
Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted.
(If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.

Now Run CCleaner

Double click CCleaner icon on desktop
Click on Run Cleaner
Confirm to delete

Now close CCleaner

Download to the desktop:Dr.Web CureIt
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    Image
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Image
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web.

1.Download and Run combofix

For information regarding Combofix, please visit this webpage:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode if needed
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed

Very Important!, before running Combofix Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note: Combofix should not be used without supervision

Please post back
