Difficult to Remove Trojan from PirateBay

Unread postby FatLeprechaun » April 24th, 2008, 6:44 am

Hello, I downloaded a trojan from PirateBay. I'm positive I got it from this file: hxxp://thepiratebay.org/tor/4143310/Ner ... ns_serials

It's been a real pain to remove. I tried AVG antivirus, Spyware doctor, Ad Aware, and various registry sweeps.

It puts weird files in my Startup. For example: Startup Item: "BM93ca57a4"; Manufacturuer: "Unknown"; Command: Rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\system32\qnvxtayg.dll",s; LOCATION: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

But when I disable in startup, it ALWAYS comes back.

The most annoying effect is that it slows down and stops my browsing. Sometimes New York Times won't load. Also, I can't run SEARCHES in google. That is, I can go to http://www.google.com, but searches won't load.

I'm running Vista Home Edition.

Here's my hijackthis log:

Your log shows that MSConfig is running at startup. This indicates that you may be using "diagnostic startup" rather than "normal startup" to stop something from running. While this is normally OK, it is possible that you have disabled something that will affect how we fix your malware problem. While disabled, it will not show up in the HijackThis log.

Go to Start > Run and type Notepad
Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is unchecked.
Code: Select all
regedit /a /e %systemdrive%\regkey.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig"
notepad %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
del /q %systemdrive%\regkey.txt

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "mslook.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate mslook.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

O1 - Hosts: ::1 localhost
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4020100D-29D7-4392-AFD5-5AD713FF4B88} - C:\Windows\system32\vTlmjhEV.dll

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F99F0A94-5A89-4D16-AEA1-E046B6D6EF56} - C:\Windows\system32\jKATNhiJ.dll

Hi Dan, thanks for your great reply. I'm currently running the Kaspersky online virus scan on my computer (I saw the advice on another thread), so it'll keep going for a few more hours. I'll follow your directions later tonight and report back my findings. Thanks again.

Hi Dan. I followed your instructions but I got stuck in trying to remove on the step using OTMoveIt2 to remove "C:\Windows\system32\jKATNhiJ.dll"

I'm able to remove everything else, but when OTMoveIt2 tries to delete this file, it says that my computer needs to remove and that the computer will remove the file on startup. But it never removes it.

I think that the jKATNhiJ.dll file is the source of all of my problems. I've been able to remove every other malicious .dll file. When I try to delete the jKATNhiJ.dll file, it says that the file is in use by another program. I've tried restarting in safe mode, or restarting in safe mode with a command prompt, but no matter what I can't remove the file. I even tried a utility called File Assassin, but it refused to remove it.

Any ideas???

My HijackThis log is now clean except for a line: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {61BDE356-BD5B-4558-84F7-857509CA5D92} - C:\Windows\system32\jKATNhiJ.dll

Even when I check that line have the HijackThis fix it, it immediately shows up again. Here's my HijackThis log in its entirey.

Re: Difficult to Remove Trojan from PirateBay

Unread postby dan12 » April 25th, 2008, 8:39 am

Please can I see the other reports I asked for.
msconfig txt report
malwarebytes report
Eset scan report.
otmoveit report

Please try to refrain from downloading other tools and using, untill I've finished my fix. :)
As it may well hinder my fix.
When you used otmoveit2 did you have a check mark in the box where it says unregister dll's?
Regards dan :)

Hi Dan, sorry for jumping the gun. I really think the "C:\Windows\system32\jKATNhiJ.dll" is the source of my problem, so I'm very eager to find a way to get rid of it.

In any case, I haven't run malware bytes yet or the Eset scan report because I got stuck on the otmoveit step. But I've included below the results of the msconfig report and the otmove it report.

When I used otmoveit2, I had a check mark in the box were it says unregister dll's. But I tried making that box unchecked, and it won't work either. Basically it's the same problem: otmoveit2 asks me to reboot and says the file will be removed on reboot, but it even is. I suspect the file is run everytime Windows Explorer starts.

Also: before my first post, I downloaded and ran StartupList 2.02. When I run that program, it shows two entries under the node "Browser Helper Objects":

(no name) = {61BDE356-BD5B-4558-84F7-857509CA5D92} = C:\Windows\system32\jKATNhiJ.dll

and

{fc025c01-c77f-671b-0924-7770ac22609f} = {f90622ca-0777-4290-b176-f77c10c520cf} = C:\Windows\system32\ioxpowam.dll

Can you let me know if this comes with an antivirus program bundled with it as I see you have avg7 on your system also.

DISABLE Spyware Doctor
It is a good program, but ... it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

please post:
vundofix txt
dss main txt and extra txt

No problem, thanks! It looks like I still haven't gotten rid of the "C:\Windows\system32\jKATNhiJ.dll" file which still shows up in HijackThis. VundoFix did remove another piece of malware, and after using it, I was able to fix the entries associated with the files VundoFix removed by using the HijackThis fix feature. So those entries don't show up in HijackThis anymore.

There is a little bit more going on from what bit I've looked at in the returned logs.
I appreciate you want the pc back up and running, with you doing your own thing, I'm having to go over things again that I have put together for the next part of the fix, fixing HJT entries only takes out the registery entry, now I have to go looking to remove the physical file, can I ask again that whilst you want me to continue, which I'm happy to do, you allow me to finish the clean up otherwise things will take a lot longer. I'm presently still working on the main log and hope to be back with you later.
Regards dan :)

Absolutely, I apologize. Sometimes I think I know computers better than I do, which causes me to get carried away :) If you're still willing, I promise to follow all of your directions exactly, and not do anything else on my own.
