keep getting fake 'security warning' and 'you won' popups

This is my first post so please bear with me if I miss anything important/obvious.
Both IE7 and Firefox are affected, although IE7 seems to trigger more pop-ups sooner (I use FF primarily).
I've tried rolling XP back to an earlier restore point without success and ran several scans and tried several fixes without success.
I've run the 7.0.3 vundofix tool with no detections (searches indicated it was worth a try).
Also ran the current smitfraudfix tool with no change (have had success with this in the past).
I've checked my hosts file and DNS IP's and they seems fine.

It started out as 'security/virus warnings' with fake scans, now I've mostly got 'free macbook' ads. Today I got a web page with what appeared to be the Windows security center indicating an infection (fake of course, just an image with a link).

Uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis. To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

• Start HijackThis
• Click on the Config button
• Click on the Misc Tools button
• Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
• Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Using DSS

• Please download Deckard's System Scanner from Tech Support Forum and save it to your desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
• Save all your work and close all opened programs.
• Double click on dss.exe to run it. Follow the prompts.
• When the scan is complete, two log files will be produced. The first one, main.txt, will be maximized, the second one, extra.txt, will be minimized.
• Please post the contents of the 2 log files in your next reply.

Once upon a time P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. • Go to VirusTotal or Jotti's

• Note details of any viruses found.
• Repeat for all files on the list, and post me the details please

The first one was a folder (empty), I deleted it after checking for hidden files.
Interestingly I could not find the .exe's (check via the command line too and couldn't find it with "dir -ah"). Could these be hidden by a rootkit maybe?

I'll re-run the last tool after a reboot into safe mode and see if it picks it up again.

the flashget is the free version and I've disabled it due to poor results with most links (only used it for large files and iso's from trusted sites).

I have not use the p2p apps in a long time (well before the problems), I'm OK with punting it if I have to.
