Need help with removing malware!!!

Unread postby andyskang » April 9th, 2008, 11:13 am

Hi all - A PC Tools volunteer steered me to this forum. I'm fairly low-tech, but was trying to fix my PC on my own up until now.

I have a Windows XP with PC Tools SpyDoctor w/Antivirus (but cannot update), free Spybot S&D, free AVG anti-virus & anti-rootkit, Sophos Anti-rootkit and Vundo Fix. My AVG detected and quarantined the Vundo virus along with adware, but then problems persisted. I purchased Spydoctor, but was unable to update it due to some problem w/my Common File. It detected Adware.Zeno_Search_Assistant and blocked several attempts from a "Dee Wee mcntnkdn.exe."

I searched my Process Explorer and noticed that there was a "Dee Wee Network Manager" program running that I did not recognize. I could not remove it or uninstall it. Also, in my Program Files there were 3 files "microsoft frontpage" (suspiciously in all lower caps), "xerox" (have no such program), and "movie maker" (also all in lower caps). I cannot remove or delete these files b/c it says they being used. Also, my Common Files were hidden from me.

My Spybot Search and Destroy detected the following threats: Smitfraud-C. Core Service on my C:\Windows\System32\drivers\core.cache.dsk (data) and Win.32.Small.azl on my C:\Windows\mrofinu.572.exe.tmp (executable). I had both fixed, but they are still both backed up in the Recovery section of my Spybot (I have the option of purging them completely, should I?). I went into my Add/Remove programs, found the Dee Wee Network Manager and uninstalled/removed it. However my Process Explorer shows "Dee Wee mcntnkdn.exe" still there and I had two new ad links on my desktop this morning.

I also cannot open up my data files! A pop-up shows saying "windows installer," which I cancel, but then another pop-up appears stating "Microsoft Professional XP with Frontpage: Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Professional XP with Frontpage." I cancel this, but then a warning pop-up appears saying "Error 1317. Setup cannot create the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared. Verify that the path exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it. When I close these 2 pop-ups, it asks me if I want to cancel installation and I say yes, then a pop-up appears showing me the file name of what I wanted to open and that "user cancelled installation."

These pop-ups continue to appear when I open up my Registry Mechanic and I have to repeatedly close them (2-3 times) before proceeding to the program. When I run my Registry Mechanic, it still flags 70 problems with my Shared DLLs, all of them located in my C: drives Common File folder. I tell the Mechanic to repair them and it does, but I do not notice any difference. I also woke up this morning to find 2 ad links on my desktop that were not there before (I have done anything with these yet).

PLEASE HELP!!! Thank you so much in advance....below is my HijackThis Log:

Unread postby Bio-Hazard » April 10th, 2008, 3:47 am

Welcome to the MWR forums. My name is Bio-Hazard. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research. Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Note: I am still in training here at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

Uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis. To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Spybot S&D Teatimer

From your log i can see this that you are running a Spybot S&D Teatimer. This might interfere with fixes we are about to do so we need to disable it.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident
    Tea-Timer
(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Stop processes with Task Manager

Press Control+Alt+Del to enter the Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes (if present). To organize them alphabetically Click Image Name tab once.

    mcntnkdn.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Sorry for wait, scan took awhile. Caught a bunch of Vundo-related stuff. Can't open my data files (Word, Excel, etc.), but I'm wondering if I need to re-install Windows Office due to damage from the viruses (or removal of them). Still getting Windows Installer pop-ups when I open a new window and my Roxio player pop-up also persists, but this is all probably ok? Will wait to hear back from you on what to do next.

Here are the Anti-Malware Log and the New HijackThis Log:

Also, my Spydoctor Registry Mechanic found 86 "problems" found mostly in my Common Files and Documents and Settings. I won't repair or do anything with these until I hear back from you guys.

That would be great if you didnt repair anything while we are working on your malware issues. Thank you.

CCleaner

Download CCleaner Slim from >here< and save it to your Desktop. When the file has been saved, go to your Desktop and double-click on ccsetupxxx_slim.exe
Follow the prompts to install the program.

Complete the installation then
  • Make sure that ALL browser windows are closed
  • Double-click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
    • Under Cookies to Delete, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently
    • Click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to Keep window.
  • Go into Options > Advanced deselect/uncheck 'Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours'
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the 'Registry' feature unless you are very familiar with the registry.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Kaspersky Online Scan

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which must be used for this scan, keep ALL programs closed
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the licence accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)

    Image
  • In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
  • In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)
  • In the Save as type prompt, select Text file (see below)

    Image
  • Copy and paste the report in your next post.

Note: It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and to speed up scan time. Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware application you use.

Unfortunately, my wife clicked on "repair" for the my Registry Mechanic, but I rebooted the PC in hopes that this would get the DLLs all back to where they were before. I've been using Firefox to surf the web (e-mail, etc.), with both my AVG and Spydoctor on for the time being. Please let me know if this is ok? The Kaspersky scanner caught some stuff, please see below. Popups regarding Windows Installer, Roxio player and "Found New Hardware" are still appearing. Will await word on next step...please note, I have not run an AVG scan or Spydoctor or Spybot scan since we started this process. Thanks!

Re: Need help with removing malware!!!

Unread postby Bio-Hazard » April 13th, 2008, 2:16 am

I've been using Firefox to surf the web (e-mail, etc.), with both my AVG and Spydoctor on for the time being. Please let me know if this is ok?

Thats is ok. Firefox is a excellent choice.

Popups regarding Windows Installer, Roxio player and "Found New Hardware" are still appearing

I'm sorry, but I don't think I'll be able to assist you further, as I don't have the knowledge to do so. It would take a long time before I figure out what's wrong with your PC, there are forums that specialize in general computer problems that will probably be able to help you. You can ask help at the WhatTheTech forums: http://forums.whatthetech.com/Microsoft ... _f119.html

First register and post like you did here, explaining your problem (do not post a HijackThis log, as your malware issues should be resolved), add a link to this topic as well. There are some excellent people over there that will be able to help you better than I can.

I'm sorry that I could not be of more help to you, and I wish you the best of luck with solving your computer problems.

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations!

You can get rid of the tools we used:
  • Malwarebytes Antimalware (I would recommed to keep this program)
  • CCleaner (I would recommed to keep this program)

If you dont want to keep them this is how you can uninstall them:

    • Click Start
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Go to Add/Remove Programs
    • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

      CCleaner
      Malwarebytes Antimalware

NOTE: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program..

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints >Malware Complaints<. You need to be registered to post as, unfortunately, we were hit with too many spam posts to allow guest posting to continue. Just find your country room and register your complaint.

    Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

    General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.
    • Clear Infected System Restore Points
      • Turn System Restore off
      • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Restore tab.
      • Check Turn off System Restore.
      • Click Apply, and then click OK.
      Restart your computer
      • Turn System Restore on
      • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Restore tab.
      • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
      • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis

      Set correct settings for files
      • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
      • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
      • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
      • If necessary check Display content of system folders
      • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
      • Click OK
    • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
    • Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
The Windows firewall only monitors incoming traffic, NOT outgoing. Using a software firewall in its default configuration to replace the Windows firewall greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Make sure your firewall is always enabled while your computer is connected to the internet.
Note: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one firewall installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.
    • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
Note: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
    • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month.
    • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs, and the updating of them on a regular basis:
    • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.
    • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer.
If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.

    • Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE and for more information regarding host files read HERE.
    • Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is absolutely essential to keep all of your security programs up to date

Also please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!

BioHazard: Thanks so much!! I've got multiple Anti-Virus programs, so I'll have to uninstall some of them. Also, you said the following:

# Clear Infected System Restore Points

* Turn System Restore off
* On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer

* Turn System Restore on
* On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis

I found that "Turn Off System Restore" was already checked when I first found it. If I do not see a reply to this posting in the next 24 hours, I'll assume that it's okay.

Finally, so long as my pop-up problem is not a symptom of a virus or malware, I'll be happy to figure it out with folks at a different forum. The Kaspersky scanner said I still had 1 more virus and 3 infected files (and in the locations that the pop-ups seemed to be coming from, like my Roxio player), so I was worried at first.

You guys have been fantastic! Thanks so much!

You should really have System restore turned on, but it is really your choice.

  • Turn System Restore on
  • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

The Kaspersky Log was ok. There are no infections in Roxio player. you could try uninstalling and the reinstalling see if that helps.

Biohazard: Thanks a lot, but I had 1 quick question if that's ok:

My PC Tools' Spydoctor w/Antivirus just caught a threat tonight saying "Hidden Files: C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download/ada4d488d7d0854b79efb8bc70c8d98/downloadprogress_.state"

I fixed it, but wanted to make sure that this is just normal protection from my Spydoctor and not an indication that something is still lingering...sorry if I'm a little paranoid now. A simple "you're ok" will do! Thanks so much!!

Hello!

Me and my teacher had a look at it. Entry looks ok, it has legitimate file path. If Spyware Doctor only reports it as a hidden file, there is nothing to worry about.
