Hope someone can help

Hi gemsbloke,

First, please turn System Restore back on. This is a vital safety net, and it's best to have it running even if your machine is infected, because an infected Restore Point is better than no Restore Point at all. We'll clean System Restore of infected Restore Points when we're finished.

Turn on System Restore and make a new Restore Point:
Open the Start Menu, right-click Computer and select Properties
Click the System Protection link on the left side
Under Automatic Restore Points place a checkmark next to all drive letters, then press Apply
Next press Create... to create a new Restore Point, type a name such as "before cleaning" and press Create
You should be prompted that a System Restore point has been created, OK the prompt and press OK to close the System Protection settings dialog box.

You mentioned that Norton has identified threats that require manual removal, please look in the Norton logs or Event History and post any details you can find about these threats - I would like the filename and path (e.g. C:\windows\virus.exe) if possible.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the Norton detection information and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
