I'm no computer wiz, but I've been getting this annoying red "x" bubble that reads "Your computer is infected!" I cannot close applications with ctrl+alt+ delete because it says "Task manager has been disabled by administrator. Please help me fix this problem.

Hello! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research so please be patient while I work on your log and I will post back here with any recommendations.
As I am still training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts. While it shouldn't be too long, you can be assured you will get the best possible advice.

  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Ares

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Also available here.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

If you wish to keep them, please do not use them until your computer is cleaned.

Step 1:
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Step 2:
There is possibly an infection which is hiding part of the HijackThis log.
Navigate to the folder you just created for HijackThis then:
Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename then change the name to sunshine.exe
Run HijackThis (sunshine.exe) and do a full system scan and copy and paste the log into your next reply.

Step 3:
Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply along with the HijackThis (sunshine.exe) log.

As for the Ares, it does not show up in Add/Remove, but I would like to get it off of my computer.

Re: Please help fix my problem!!

Unread postby Rodav » April 2nd, 2008, 9:13 am

I suggest you print these instructions out or save them in notepad to your desktop as you will be in safe mode and have no access to the internet.

Step 1:
Please disable Spysweeper temporarily as it may interfere with the fix.
  1. Right click on Spysweeper icon near the clock and select Shields.
  2. Select the Web Browser tab. Uncheck (untick) all the boxes there.
  3. Select the Network tab. Uncheck (untick) all the boxes there.
  4. Select the Windows System tab. Uncheck (untick) all the boxes there.
  5. Select the Startup tab. Uncheck (untick) Startup items box.
  6. Select the Email Attachments tab. Uncheck (untick) Email Attachments* box.
  7. Right click on Spysweeper icon and select Shutdown.

Step 2:
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Step 3:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Step 4:
Old versions of Java contain vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. You need to remove the older versions and get the latest version.
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Now Restat your computer

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE) and install it to your computer.

Step 5:
We will remove Ares now.
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ares] "C:\Program Files\Ares\Ares.exe" -h

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application and Restart your computer.

Use Windows Explorer to navigate to and delete the following files and folders (if they are present):

Folders:
C:\Program Files\Ares

Now just exit Explorer and empty your Recycle Bin.

Step 6:
Run HijackThis (sunshine.exe) and do a full system scan and in your next reply please post:
  • The SDFix report. (C:\SDFix\Report.txt)
  • The MalwareBytes log
  • The new HijackThis
Also please let me know how your computer is running.

Sorry, I've been out of town for a few days and was unable to respond.
When I returned it looks as if Norton detected and removed the problem.
I will still try and run your steps as soon as possible and post a log to make sure it's gone.

Due to Lack of Response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
