Hello,

I am continuously receiving the message "Your computer was infected by unknown trojan. It's dangerous for your system (ciritical files can be lost)! Click OK to download the antispyware program to clean your system! (Recommended)". I have attempted to use Smitfraudfix, superantispyware, AVG Antispyware, and Spyware Doctor to no avail.

My hijack log is below. Thank you!

Ginga

Hi, ginga, and welcome to malwareremoval forums

I'm dan12, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi, Ginga,
Please download ATF Cleaner here by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

Logs looking good ! How are things your end?

Right click start, In the drop down menu click "Explore" Then navigate to each file\ folder in the left hand pane, which will reveal its content in the right hand pane, highlight file or folder right click and Delete, if present:

C:\SDFix << This folder
c:\documents and settings\ginga\favorites\health << This folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Ginga\Desktop\SmitfraudFix << This folder

C:\Documents and Settings\Ginga\My Documents\Downloads\SDFix.exe << This file
C:\Documents and Settings\Ginga\My Documents\Dell Drivers\AuthChk.exe << This file

Can you post a further Total scan log just to make sure I have it all.
Thanks dan

Hi Dan,

Three questions: I have used an SMTPAuth service for email for several years because I move around a lot and have kept my cable company email. For the first time ever, A spam complaint was filed against me for an email sent to eight people on Monday, March 24th - a day that I did not even boot my computer. There is nothing in my sent folder for that day. Could this have to do with the malware issues I was having? What should I do to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Now, each time I boot, my system detects new hardware when I haven't added any new hardware. Once we get my system totally clean, I was planning to let it execute and go from there. What do you advise?

I had a harddrive failure and completed reinstalled everything on a new harddrive from scratch in December. My system runs much better but it takes a while for it to "wake up" upon booting. I have removed everything from my Startup folder and disabled Norton GoBack. Any other suggestions?

The latest results of my TotalScan are below.

You could of taken this issue up with your ISP as you hadn't even been on the pc that day.
I'm not 100% sure it could of been a malware issue to be honest. keep all your antimalware programs upto date plus your a\v,run regular scans as part of a maintenance routine, my last post will give you some good advice.

Now, each time I boot, my system detects new hardware when I haven't added any new hardware. Once we get my system totally clean, I was planning to let it execute and go from there. What do you advise?

These two points could be linked, in as much that its detecting new hardware, I'm not sure how you may of configured your new hardrive so I can only assume. This is a little out my field of expertise as it could be hardware issues.
With regards to your other Issues I may need to forward you to experts in that field, so that you receive the best advice.
My area of expertise is in malware and not hardware / system issues.
These links maybe helpful to help resolve your other issues: pcpitstop
virtualdr.com

This maybe An interesting read also:http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html
Apart from this Issue with your system how is the machine running?
Hope this has been a little helpfull.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the guidance. I think my laptop is running really well - other than the couple of issues I noted. I will follow up as you suggested. I did notice in my last TotalScan that 5 or 6 files were identified that were not identified in the last scan. Do I need to take action on those?

Thank you!

You knew I wouldn't forget you :D

Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Create a new System Restore Point
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

Install Spyware Guard
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.
