no internet access; gives not valid win32 application

Unread postby jojoboxing » March 30th, 2008, 9:53 pm

Dell XPS laptop M140. I am the only user. Only one user account. No guest account.

1. I downloaded a program that recieved a clean scan from Trend Micro so I installed it. My wireless internet access started to slow down tremendously so I rebooted my system.

2. 15 minutes after reboot I noticed that Trend Micro Security Suite 12 and Zone Alarm did not show up in the system tray and my internet access was now being intermittently blocked. Any program I clicked gave a "not a win32 application" error.

3. I made a disk with Knoppix 5.1.1 and scanned the system with linux based avast and did not find anything. I was able to use the internet without problems while on linux.

4. I decided to try to do an upgrade/repair with my original (NOT dell CD - NOT bootleg) winxp CD and received an error that ajtr507.sys was not found and the system rebooted. Trying to continue the installation gave the same error followed by reboot.

5. when trying to go into safe mode I would get the option to load sptd.sys and would get a reboot no matter if loaded or skipped loading. Sometimes I would get the BSOD.

6. Trying to get safe mode working: I got into windows normally and deleted sptd.sys and uninstalled Daemon tools. I restored sptd.sys after I found that functionality did not improve. I went into command line from windows and tried to "osunist.exe" to get rid of the failed install. I got an error about not having windows keys or something similar to this.

7. I made a rescue disk with ultimate boot CD for windows and was unable to get network cards/adapters working. I decided to uninstall Trend Micro and installed the most current version of Avast that I could find on cnet.com and was able to load it via usb. I set it to scan on boot. ran CCleaner from usb. was not able to run combofix from usb. I rebooted the system and avast found some 2 minor viruses. I ran avast again when I got into windows and did not find any viruses. I rebooted the system 2 more times and still the same non-functional environment.

msconfig won't allow me to make changes.

I wish I did not do all this and just found this forum first. Thanks for helping!

Re: no internet access; gives not valid win32 application

Unread postby Simon V. » April 2nd, 2008, 6:10 pm

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Step 1

Please download and install CCleaner.

Open CCleaner. On the Windows tab, leave the default options alone.

  • On the Applications tab, check (tick) all the boxes except Saved Form Information. This will remove all your saved passwords if you leave this box checked.
  • Click on the Run Cleaner button at the bottom right hand corner.
  • When the cleaner has completed, click Tools in the Left Pane.
  • Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
  • In the lower right, click Save to Text File.
  • Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
  • You can leave the filename as install.txt.
  • Click Save, then exit Ccleaner.

Step 2

Please download SafeBootKeyRepair.exe from Tech Support Forum and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click on SafeBootKeyRepair.exe to run it.
  • Notepad will open shortly aftewards; save the file to a convenient location.

Step 3

Print these instructions or copy them to Notepad and save it to your desktop, as you won't be able to access internet in Safe Mode.

Please download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% (Drive that contains the Windows directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please reboot into Safe Mode. To do this, go to Start > Turn off Computer, and select Restart. Rapidly tap F8 just before Windows starts to load. In the menu that appears, select Safe Mode (Without Networking)

Log in to your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, do the following:

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double-click RunThis.bat to start the script.

  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any trojan services and registry entries that it finds, then prompt you to press any key to reboot; press any key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts SDFix will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished. Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt (Report.txt will also be copied to clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Step 4

In your next reply, please post:

  • the CCleaner Uninstall List (install.txt)
  • the SafeBootKeyRepair log
  • the SDFix report (C:\SDFix\Report.txt)
  • a new HijackThis log
