Ok, that's good I got the files I wanted, However we still have a stubburn HJT entry.
So, I'm going to diable a couple of programs that may be hindering the removal.
we will renable when done.

We need to Temporarily disable the Real-time Protection on Windows Defender as it may interfere with the HijackThis fixes we make.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools => General Settings
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

DISABLE Spyware Doctor
It is a good program, but ... it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

Disable AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Click Shield
  • Click under "resident shield is"
  • Change it to inactive
  • Close the program

Re-boot into safe mode

  • Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear use arrow up to highlight
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.
  • For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:HERE

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Please include in your next post:
  • New highjackthis log

Thanks dan

Hi Dan

Did as requested apart from....I couldn't find Windows Defender to disable. I uninstalled the prog and will reinstall later.
After the first run in safemode and rebooting to normal mode I found that the HJT report still showed the

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

item. I do hope I didn't jump the gun but I thought I would completely disconnect my internet and disable Norton (now enabled). I completed the safemode run of HJT and fix. Rebooted in normal mode with Norton reinstated and this is the result of the newer HJT report.

Please don't 'tell me off' for anticipating disabling Norton. I did make sure it was all safe before i did it!

Thanks

Colin

Please don't 'tell me off' for anticipating disabling Norton. I did make sure it was all safe before i did it!

Not at all, I think you have done extremely well, you always posted promptly, which enabled us to get on top of the infection. :)

Ok, were just going to tidy up items you don't need.
malwarebytes is a good program so will leaver that for you, don't forget to update it on a regular basis.
ccleaner another good program again it's entirely up to yourself if you keep them.

UNINSTALL COMBOFIX

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Image
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

Close all windows and try typing this command directly in and see if ComboFix runs.

Remember to use the " marks and there is a space between exe" and /killall

Start > Run > type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

If ComboFix runs, please post the log.

Let me know if this went ok.

Hi Dan

The first part went ok and the prog showed as 'Combofix' uninstalled. The second part didn't seem to do much just left me with the attached screen message. Not sure if this is what should have happened or not.

Is everything completed now? Can I just confirm that the later HJT report I sent is still showing the line

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

is this ok?

Thanks

Colin

Hi, Colin,
The second part didn't seem to do much just left me with the attached screen message. Not sure if this is what should have happened or not.

That's fine just wanted to know you were unable to start the program.

Regarding this RO- line:
Have you checked your settings in IE explorer?
Tools/Internet Options/General? do you have Use blank in there?

let me know.

Hi Dan

How did you know I used IE 'blank page'? ;)

I think I see what it's all about. That line refers to the IE instructions I have asked for when IE opens. I thought it was a roque line that needed to be deleted.

If that's everything now it just leaves me to say thank you for your time and of course your expert knowledge. I have learned a lot over the last couple of days, thanks.

If you don't get paid for this, you should do and if you do get paid, it's not enough. :)

Thank you again Dan

regards

Well done for sticking with me :D
The first part will clear the items in system restore for you.

Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP or Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

or

Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.
(Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing)

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!
