Baylies hijackthis log

Unread postby wolfenstien » March 15th, 2008, 10:20 pm

A friends daughter was having alot of problems with her computer after downloading a "spyware alerter" program..... go figure this is what brought in a bundle of trojans and other stuff.... after getting her computer home with me, I was able to get IE to stay stable enough to update the OS (XP) and then install McAfee. McAfee found over 170 items and claimed to remove or quarantined them. then I was able to install Ad-Aware and it found about 130 items and removed all of them, and then I installed SpyBot S&D and it found about 70 or so, and I was able to immunize everything after about an hour of it trying to immunize.... after all this, I still have issues with IE7 (updated through the new updates I had to do to allow McAfee to install because it demanded the computer be service pack 2). I installed FireFox and it still causes IE7 to popup and stuff... there is no effect when I use Opera, but the owner of the computer doesnt like Opera, she likes IE and FF.... so here I am asking for help in getting to the root of this..
Below is a copy & paste of the HJT from her computer.
Thanks all.
Wolfie

Hi, and welcome to malwareremoval forums

I'm dan12, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

Hi, firstly when you post to the thread can you copy and paste your logs into the post and not attach them.
Can you uninstall, "HijackThis v1.99.1" this is the old version, via control panel,add and remove programs.

Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

* Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
* By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
* Click on Install.
* It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
* Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
* Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
* Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

please post new HJT log

Can you create a folder on your desktop and name it "HJT" locate > C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\HiJackThis.exe << This file
copy "HiJackThis.exe" and paste it into the folder you created on the desktop named "HJT".
We do this as HJT needs its own folder to make backups, should things not go as we want !

This will be the path once you have made the above change.

I believe we have some files hiding from us.
Please go to the C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\HJT\HiJackThis.exe
. Right click on the HijackThis.exe file and select "Rename". Rename it removal.exe,

Then run HijackThis again and post a new log please.

Thanks dan

Dan,
thanks very much for your help.
I have created a new folder on the desktop and named it "HJT" and copied and pasted the exe into the folder, then opened the folder, renamed the exe from "HiJackThis.exe" to "remove.exe" then ran it. I hit the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button, here is a copy paste of the log file:

Well done, I can see the files I want to get at now.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

May take a little while for me to research the returned combo log but hope to be back with you at some point tomorrow as it's late here and I've an early start in the morning.

I cannot save it directly to the desktop.... that computer we are working on it not online. I can save to this computer, burn to cd, and transfer from cd to the desktop....

ok, I have it transfered to the desktop, and saved there on the comp we are working on.
You want me to follow the instructions on the guide page for combofix and then run it as the guide page says or wait for your farther instructions?

Read the Instruction, then run the scan and post me the log it produces.

Ok, this went much differently than described in the guide.... here is the log that CF created:

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

I am not sure what I did wrong.... but I figured something was up so i ran CF again, and this time it ran like described in the guide.
Here is a C&P of the log it created:

Re: Baylies hijackthis log

Unread postby dan12 » March 16th, 2008, 8:45 pm

Have you followed this procedure?

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Image

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.
