I am having "delayed" internet slowness when using IE. This happened after getting a nuwar virus. My other machines going through the same router work very fast. I am not a novice and have tried everything I can safely think of. It feels like a DNS problem but pings using names come back almost immediately. Browser always states "waiting for http....", sometimes a full minute or more. If I remove my network device and reinstall it seems to be fast for a few pages and then slow again. I have tried removing everyting I can think of including all virus and spyware protection, stopping everything I can think of in the browser settings, etc. Some of the items I have put back, some I have not. NOTE: I have "XXX"ed out an IP address that would identify my router and an open port I use.

Please right-click on HijackThis.exe and choose Rename. Rename it to Scanner.exe.

Post back a new HijackThis log after you've done that.

Since my last post I removed some items from hijack this myself and also ran some utilities I found on other peoples posts that did find more remants of whatever I had. My internet speed has not returned.

I have also done what you requested in the hope that you can learn what was removed and maybe help others better. anyway that you for responding and if you see something still there, please let me know. Thanks, David.

I meant to say, MY INTERNET PERFORMANCE HAS RETURNED TO NORMAL and is again nice and fast with no delay.

Hi :)

Your logs are clean, and as your problems are gone I'll give you a few prevention tips to keep your computer clean in the future -

Disable and Enable System Restore - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

Step 1: Turn off System Restore:

  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Step 2: Reboot your computer.

Step 3: Turn on System Restore:

  • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Note: Only do this once, NOT on a regular basis!

Make your Internet Explorer More Secure

If you are using Internet Explorer 7, please read and follow the recommendations at this site - http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm

If you are using Internet Explorer 6, please read and follow the following recommendations -

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use a Firewall - Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. The Windows firewall isn't sufficient as it only monitors incoming connections.

Here are a few (free) firewalls, please download and install one of them:


Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install WinPatrol - An excellent startup manager, notifies you if programs are added to startup, allows delayed startup, ... A must have! An installation guide can be found here: http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. You can download the program here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A tutorial can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutoria ... ial49.html

Install IE-Spyad - IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. Update All Your Security Programs Regularly - Make sure you update all your security programs (Anti-Virus, Firewall, Anti-Spyware) regularly (once a weak, at least). Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
