Celldorado and pc-on-internet ads opening in new windows

Unread postby diggerdi » March 5th, 2008, 4:50 pm

I'm afraid you'll have to bear with me as I'm not very good with the technical side of computers, but for a number of weeks I have been getting the above adverts/websites opening in a new window. There are also others, but these are the main two. Below is my Hijack this log. Please be gentle with me and explain things in words of one syllable! Thanks.

Hello diggerdi :),

I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are using Windows Vista you must right click on the desktop icon and choose Run as Administrator all tools.
----------------------------------------------
Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 5.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
----------------------------------------------
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Unread postby chryssi2001 » March 11th, 2008, 1:40 pm

Hello diggerdi :),

It surely looks better. You did great.
Do you still have pop-ups/adverts?
------------------------------------------------------
Did you intentionally installed this program?

Ad Blocker

Do you know what is this? Did you install KeithArt?
C:\WINDOWS\KeithArt[1].scr
------------------------------------------------------
Please download ATF cleaner
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
------------------------------------------------------
Disable SUPERAntiSpyware until the computer is clean
  • Right-click on the shortcut from the system tray
  • Choose View Control Center (preferences/options)
  • On the General and Startup tab, uncheck Start SUPERAntispyware when Windows starts.
  • Click Close to exit.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
------------------------------------------------------
Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker
------------------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.stumbleupon.com

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
------------------------------------------------------
COMBOFIX-Script
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system\SYSRegC.dll

    Folder::
    C:\Program Files\ZoneAlarmSB

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{f0d4b239-da4b-4daf-81e4-dfee4931a4aa}]
    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "Symantec NetDriver Warning"=-

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
------------------------------------------------------
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.
------------------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Using Internet Explorer Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html and click the Accept button at the end of the page.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Hi Chryssi

In answer to your questions:

I did not have any ads or pop-ups at all yesterday evening whilst I was following your instructions. I left Kaspersky running when I went to bed, hence the computer has been on all night, and no ads have appeared overnight.

Regarding Ad Blocker, I may have downloaded it, I can't remember. I tried so many different things to try and get rid of the adverts.

KeithArt is my screen saver.

Hopefully, everything seems OK now. I was surprised at how many infections showed up throughout the process. Many, many thanks for your help.

As a side note, I thought I needed a new keyboard as when I was typing letter were missing and I had to go back and press the key again. This now seems OK so it must have been one of the viruses/infections.

Look forward to, hopefully, getting the "all clear" from you.

Thanks again.

Hello diggerdi,

Yes you had a lot. You are welcome :)

As a side note, I thought I needed a new keyboard as when I was typing letter were missing and I had to go back and press the key again. This now seems OK so it must have been one of the viruses/infections.
Some times viruses and other infections do create these problems.

Look forward to, hopefully, getting the "all clear" from you.
Not yet, but we are not far from there.;)

Upload a File to Jotti
Please visit http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
C:\Program Files\Online Services\BTopenworldAnytime\Narrowband\Signup\Reinstall\SignupLt.exe/btwebcontrol.dll

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the results in your next response.

Do you use BTopenworldAnytime? It might be a False Positive of a scanner that's why i ask.
----------------------------------------------------
Since you are not sure about Ad Blocker, and i can't find information to convince me it's ok, we'll remove it.

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.
    Ad Blocker
    AdwareAlert

Do not worry if these programs do not excist.
----------------------------------------------------
Did you fix this line during my previous post? I still see it excists.
Did you intentionally added it in your trusted Zone? If you did let it be.
If you didn't please fix it. Let me know.

FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Hi Chryssi

I copied and pasted the file into virusscan.jotti and the following appeared

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

Re the BTOpenworldAnytime - I used to be with BT Broadband and think this may be something to do with that. I don't use BT now.

Adblocker and AdwareAlert were not in the list of programs.

Hello Diane,

Well since you don't use BTOpenworldAnytime now let's remove it. The file you uploaded and Jotti couldn't give us results, shows infected.
---------------------------------------------------
Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

Online Services
---------------------------------------------------
OTMoveIt2
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code: Select all
    C:\Program Files\Online Services

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste Standard List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
---------------------------------------------------
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 8.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 8 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
---------------------------------------------------
Post back:
OTMoveIt2 report.
Tell me about this line please.

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.stumbleupon.com

I have checked the box twice for this, why is it still there?

Stumbleupon is a 'program' which generates random websites of subjects which you are interested in, ie amongst my chosen subjects are cross-stitch and family history, plus many other subjects of interest to me. I do find it a useful tool, but if it is harmful I would like to remove it.

I would be grateful, once my computer is clean, if you could advise me which security programs are the best ones to have (preferably free!) to minimise the chance of getting new infections. As you will already know I currently have AVG antivirus, Zonealarm (which does make my computer run very slowly), Superanti spyware, Ccleaner, Adaware SE (the 2007 version doesn't work), and Max Registry cleaner (which I have paid for a year's sub).

Again, please accept my sincere gratitude for your help so far. I will certainly make a donation to this site.

Hello Diane :),

Stumbleupon is a 'program' which generates random websites of subjects which you are interested in, ie amongst my chosen subjects are cross-stitch and family history, plus many other subjects of interest to me. I do find it a useful tool, but if it is harmful I would like to remove it.

It's not harmfull you can let it be there but i don't see the need to have it in your Trusted Sites.

If you want to remove it you can do it mannually from IE Tools/Internet Options, Security tab, click on the Trusted sites, then click on Sites, copy paste in the Websites box Stumbleupon.com and click on remove, apply, ok, and you are done.

You can change Zonealarm and install another Free firewall, see my links have some read and install a new one. In order to install the new one, first download the new one, disconnect from Internet, remove the old one, reboot, install the new, and connect to Internet, and you'll be fine. Don't forget to disable Windows Firewall.
I don't personally advice using Registry Cleaners, unless you know what's bad or good.

FREE FIREWALLS
Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here

You will find some advice in my all clean speech and you can decide what to use.
You can remove Ad-Aware SE, since it's old, and install Spybot Search & Destroy.
WinPatrol is a very good program which warns you when something new is trying to install on your pc.
SiteHound toolbar is very usefull too, it actually prevents you from going to bad sites.

Keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, update and use it often. It's a very good scanner.

Again, have a read in my all clean speech and check each and every program listed there, install check them how they work, if you like them, and don't forget the most Important thing. Be carefull do not visit suspicious sites, do not click on any links or emails sent to you even if you know they are clean.

Again, please accept my sincere gratitude for your help so far. I will certainly make a donation to this site.

You are welcome :), i am glad i was able to help. Thanks for the Donation too.;)

-------------------------------------------
Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Image
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.
-------------------------------------------
Congratulations you are clean! :)

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.
(Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing)

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.
