Now, I don't know if it matters, but I'll post some other info too..
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium
64b system.
I think what I have is Mayday trojan... but I'm unsure how I got it. From what I understand, this trojan uses p2p? Does that mean it's using my internet connection to transfer files or information?
I think it is making some of my downloads corrupt, because the recent updates I tried to install for AVG and programs of the like, failed becauase of a "corrupt" file or error upon downloading?
It also *hides* the serach results on google if you serach "remove mayday" or remove Iedefender, ect, ect.
I also get the following popup almost every time I try to navigate a webpage
Image
It trys to prompt me to download IE defender, which I haven't.
Any help or assistiance is greatly appreciated.

Hello, and welcome to Malware Removal Forums.
My name is Matt and I will be assisting you with your malware issues.
Please be patient as I need some time to review your HijackThis log and I will post back recommendations for repairs.
As I am still on training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by a Teacher. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any questions or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you! Not having symptoms of malware doesn't mean that you are clean!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.

Hi
REMOVE TRENDMICRO HIJACKTHIS-Beta

Please delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you have now. Use Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove HijackThis. What you have now is a Beta Version.

You can get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from
here

Click on the link and select Save, save it to your desktop and double click HJTsetup.exe

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file

When the scan is finished, Click Edit > Select All > Edit > Copy and paste its contents here please.

Download FixIEDef by ShadowPuterDude to the Desktop.

Double-click FixIEDef.exe
Click OK on the disclaimer
Click on Scan! button to run the tool.

WARNING: FixIEDef will kill all copies of Internet Explorer and Explorer that are running, during removal of malicious files. The icons and Start Menu on your Desktop will not be visible while FixIEDef is removing malicious files. This is necessary to remove parts of the infection that would otherwise not be removed.

Click Exit once FixIEDef displays the All Finished message.
A log will be created on your desktop. Please post the text from FixIEDef.log in your next reply.

Prior to this post I did a scan with AVG and healed a "trojan downloader", and restarted my computer. After I did this, the symptoms I had went away... my browser (IE) was acting as normal, and I wasn't getting that error message.

Hi
Well, you are certainly looking cleaner now :)
Just a few housekeeping jobs to do:

Please right-click the HijackThis shortcut
Select Run as Administrator (Windows UAC may prompt you for an administrator password)
When it opens, click Scan only
Place checkmarks next to the following:
  • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
  • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
  • O2 - BHO: MS Video Control 1.0 - {4E21495F-0004-4614-9DC9-6B8F7E5024F5} - C:\Windows\msvidc32.dll (file missing)
  • O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\ssv.dll
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateReg] "C:\Windows\system32\jureg.exe"
  • O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\ssv.dll
  • O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\ssv.dll
Close ALL open windows, expecially browsers
Click Fix checked

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6u3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

The link you posted in your previous reply prompts me to download (to what I presume to be the latest version of java). Which conflicts with your directions...

Image

Do you just want me to download it?

I have checked and fixed the items you told me to in your last post.
Sorry for the confusion...
