Hi there
I have a fairly new pc running on Windows Vista and have Windows Defender and Norton Security 2008 installed. I have recently started getting "fake" websites coming up when I try to open my "Google" homepage - eg http://www.puresafety.com or "advanced cleaner". The first shows a copy of my Norton Security page showing all my pc and internet protection, however its showing that I have no antivirus or spyware removal software - which of course is not the case. Both Windows Defender and Norton Security have shown threats when I've done the scans and say they've fixed them but I still keep getting the same problerms. I also have a flashing yellow triangle with exclamation mark (warning sign) in my icon tray which keeps fading in and out a message saying System Alert:Malware Threats with a blurb about how to download latest malware removal software. I don't think this is legit - is it? Before I did my last scan the title of the message actually showed the name of a virus win-something or other, sorry can't remember. Also it sometimes flicks onto a website called Advanced Cleaner which tells me I'm infected with "porn" and tries to download a software to remove it - thankfully my Norton Security blocks this. Then every so often I get a window popping up saying Internet Explorer alert - your computer is infected with spyware.....would you like download software to remove it. Again I just get rid of this. Please, please help me this is so annoying and very worrying. I've been on the microsoft website as this pc is only about 6 months old but the information they give on it is for IT professionals dealing with company networks and I'm struggling to understand it. I go by FencerGirl. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Finally, please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

It may take me a while to reply to you as all of my fixes are being checked by experts to ensure that you are getting a good fix. And remember, like you I have a real life, so I may not be at my computer when you are!

Hi Wendi,
Roll up your sleeves and let's get cleaning!

Download and Run SmitfraudFix
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and right-click on SmitfraudFix.exe and click on Run as administrator
Click Allow
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please do an online scan with KasperskyWebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise

    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

After you've done all of the above, please post back with the results from SmitFraudFix, your Kaspersky log and a new HijackThis log.
