Hi Magdaloo,

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Re: Internet explorer shutdown and comp crashes?

Unread postby silver » January 24th, 2008, 12:14 am

Hi Magdaloo,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_04
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
Notification Utility
p2pnetworks
Notification Utility and p2pnetworks are malware.
The Java installations are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 4) from here

You have a program called Messenger Plus! 3 installed. When installing it offers a choice either to Install the sponsor program or I refuse to give my support, don't install the sponsor. The sponsor program is malware so if you installed it we need to remove it. Even if you didn't install the sponsor program I recommend you remove this program anyway as the developer is spreading malware for profit - read more information about this here.
To remove the program open Add/Remove Programs, find and remove Messenger Plus! 3

You have LimeWire, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
To remove, open Add/Remove Programs and remove these entries:
LimeWire
LimeWire 4.8.1

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, download Deljob.exe and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick Deljob.exe to start the program.
A file called logit.txt should appear on your Desktop and should open in Notepad, post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MediaPipe P2P Loader] "C:\Program Files\p2pnetworks\mpp2pl.exe" /H
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [x-access] C:\WINDOWS\sysxa5427_5.00.exe s
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [kuzf] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\kuzf\kuzfm.exe
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [] (User 'SYSTEM')
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/popcaploader_v10.cab

If you removed Messenger Plus! 3, then also check these lines:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" /WinStart

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, reboot your computer

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following:
C:\Program Files\p2pnetworks <- folder
C:\Program Files\AltPayments <- folder
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\kuzf <- folder
C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sysxa5427_5.00.exe

If you removed Messenger Plus! 3 then also delete this folder:
C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3 <- folder

If you have trouble deleting any, please let me know in your next response.

Once complete, please reboot again and post the logit.txt output along with a new HijackThis log.

Re: Internet explorer shutdown and comp crashes?

Unread postby Magdaloo » January 25th, 2008, 11:17 pm

Hello,
Here are the results. I was unable to remove the following files because they didn't exist. I tried to run a search to find them on the harddrive and that came up with no results as well. They are:

C:\Program Files\p2pnetworks
C:\Program Files\AltPayments
C:\PROGRA~1|Common~1\kuzf
C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sysxa5427_5.00.exe
C:\Program Files\MessengerPLus!3

Also, when I did a system scan only through HijackThis to uncheck lines, I was unable to find the following 2 files even though I did uninstall MessengerPlus! 3:
04 - HKLM\..\Run[MessengerPlus3} "C:\Program Files\MessengerPLus! 3\MsgPlus.exe"
04 - HKLM\..\Run[MessengerPlus3} "C:\Program Files\MessengerPLus! 3\MsgPlus.exe" /WinStart

The logit.txt fils is:

Re: Internet explorer shutdown and comp crashes?

Unread postby silver » January 25th, 2008, 11:54 pm

Hi Magdaloo,

It's OK that those files, folders and HJT lines weren't present, but we needed to check to make sure.

Please press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir C:\Documents and Settings\Magda\Application Data\intrathirdwarn /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look.txt.
Please wait until the black box closes before opening look.txt, then post the contents of look.txt in your next response.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Check that you can see DSS.exe on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes that appear and press Fix
  • Then close Deckard's System Scanner

Next, backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\AltPayments]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\satmat]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"C:\\Program Files\\p2pnetworks\\p2pnetworks.exe"=-

Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:Image
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.
You can then delete fix.reg

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop

Once complete, please post the look.txt output, the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Hello,

I did everything however I ran into problems when running the Kaspersky scan, the comp kept shutting down. I tired at different times and i would shut down at various % comp stages, the furthest it ever got was 30%?

The look.txt produced no response.

Re: Internet explorer shutdown and comp crashes?

Unread postby silver » January 29th, 2008, 5:33 am

Hi Magdaloo,

Sorry, the look.txt command I gave you contained an error. Please try this:

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir "C:\Documents and Settings\Magda\Application Data\intrathirdwarn" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"
A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look.txt.
Please wait until the black box closes before opening look.txt, then post the contents of look.txt in your next response.

Sorry to hear you had difficulty with the Kaspersky scan, please try using Dr Web instead:

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UN-CHECK Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and make these changes:
    • Next to Infected objects select Report
    • Next to Incurable objects select Report
    • Next to Infected containers select Report
  • At the bottom-left, UN-CHECK Prompt on action, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Then select Complete scan and press the green arrow to start the scan
  • When the scan is complete, click File-> Save report list, save the report to your desktop and close Dr Web CureIt

Once complete, please post the look.txt output, the Dr Web report and a new HijackThis log.

Re: Internet explorer shutdown and comp crashes?

Unread postby Magdaloo » February 1st, 2008, 8:49 am

So I ran the Dr.WEB CureIt scan. The Express ran fine with nothing to fix but once again the deeper scan kept shutting down the computer at various stages. Sometimes it went as far as 40% and then just crashed.

This is a perfect example of the problem I had before I started asking for help. I could perform basic actions on the computer but the second I tried do something more extensive it would just shut down.

I did get the look.txt report thought! Here it is:

Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is F4C9-A500

Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\Magda\Application Data\intrathirdwarn

08/26/2005 08:58 PM <DIR> .

And the HijackThis REport:

Please tell me exactly what happens when the machine crashes and/or shuts down.
Does it shut down like you pressed Start->Shut Down or does it turn off like you had a power cut?

It shuts down like a power cut. A few times after it reboots I get a pop up message on my background that reads as follows:

cli.exe - Command Language Runtime Debugging Service

Application had generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0x204(516), Thread id=0X218(586)

Click OK to terminate the application
Click cancel to debug the application

I've tried pressing cancel and then I get a message along the lines of "no program could be found to debug" and when I click OK it sometimes goes away and comp runs "basically" or it just shuts down again and sometimes goes into a constant reboot for a few times. Then it starts to "basically" work again???? It's very very strange!

Was that useful at all?

Thanks

Hi Magdaloo,

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Magda\Application Data\intrathirdwarn

The shutdown issue you are describing sounds very much like a hardware problem. It could be that the virus scanning is stressing your system - sustained high CPU and hard drive use - and this is causing the shutdown to occur.

We've had a close look at your machine and at this stage I think we have removed most if not all malware from your machine, but without a full system scan I can't be certain.

I think the fastest way to resolve this issue is to ask for assistance with the power-off problem from a PC troubleshooting forum like PC Pitstop. PC Pitstop specializes in handling problems like this so you are certain to get expert assistance and a speedy resolution is very likely.

I recommend you post there and once you are able to run a full scan we can finish up.
Please let me know how you would like to proceed.
