Unread postby stewartmac1 » December 24th, 2007, 7:34 pm

Hi! Welcome to the MWR forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.

Please be patient as my posts to you have to be checked before I reply, so they make take longer.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Hi

P2P Warning!
Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation
Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer programs themselves is here :
Clean/Infected P2P Programs
Please refrain from using Limewire during the course of your fix, so you dont risk inviting more malware onto your computer.

Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find "wiki.dll" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

Hi

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove the following.
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Do Not remove this one.
Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Messenger Plus! (MessengerPlus2, MessengerPlus3) (MP) is an add‑on for Microsoft's free messaging programs Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. It is a 'free' download (with a few stingers in its tail). MP includes an optional Sponsor Program provided by C2Media. The Sponsor Program is commonly known in the anti‑spyware and adware world as 'Lop' or 'Lop.com'. There has been a problem since Messenger Plus! first started including the Sponsor Program in approximately May 2003, with users installing the Sponsor Program without understanding what the Sponsor Program is, what it does to a user's system, or the privacy implications involved.

Messenger Plus!, if installed to include the 'sponsor program', will install adware on your computer that generates pop up windows. The Sponsor Program will also change your home page, your search engine settings, place numerous links in IE favorites (including online casino and gambling links) and place more links on your desktop. The search toolbar that is installed cannot be turned off. The pop up advertising windows will appear even if you are running IE's pop‑up blocker. This is because the Sponsor Program adds its advertisement URLs to the pop‑up blocker exclusion list. If you want to reinstall MessengerPlus3, make sure you click "I refuse, do not install the sponsor program". This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.

Hi, thanks for your help in resolving this issue. After some research I found & removed 'Intelligent Advisor'. Can you please give me some advice on what this is & how to avoid it being installed again? Thank you.

Hi

I see you have XoftSpySE installed. This an application with a shady past, using false detections to extract fees, and copying the Spybot name. Its present integrity is not totally known. I would suggest you remove it also, through Add/Remove programs.

Are you a regular user of online database lookups, that use some kind of SQL code library?

Post a new HijackThis log in your next reply for reviewing, please.

Hi,
Are you a regular user of online database lookups, that use some kind of SQL code library? In answer to your question: I'm not sure what it is you are asking...sorry!

Re: Unwanted windows pages opening

Unread postby Scotty » December 30th, 2007, 3:27 pm

Hi

I have to admit, Im not sure what is either. What made me ask was the Wiki.dll but that has vanished now anyway.

This program appears to be related to that Intelligent Advisor and needs to be removed too.

Hi again, thanks for taking the time to help. I did some research on WIKI.DLL & the general concensus was that it wasn't good, so I deleted it. I took a bit of a chance by removing it as I didnt really know what it was, however it seems to have gone ok.

Hi

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

      + Extended(If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:

      + Scan Archives
      + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which is needed for the Kaspersky Scan, keep ALL programs closed until the scan is complete. This includes your anti-virus. Once you have installed the Scanner, and the updated definitions, you can disconnect from the Internet.Re-enable the anti-virus before reconnecting to the Internet.

Re: Unwanted windows pages opening

Unread postby Scotty » January 1st, 2008, 7:48 pm

Hi

There is a file I am deleting below but Im just wondering what else is in the same folder and is it needed?
This folder- C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Shared

Navigate to and delete the following files and/or folders (if they are present):

Files:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Shared\03 Track 3.wma

Folders:
C:\Program Files\IntelligentAdvisor
C:\Program Files\PlayMP3z

You may wish to keep hold of the Kaspersky Online Scan as an extra on-demand virus-scanner.
If not you can uninstall it through Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs

Disable Teatimer
First:

  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second:

  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... _side.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot the computer, then follow my previous steps regarding Teatimer to renable it, then post a new HijackThis log.
